Hello, my name is Craig Moyer, I am a student at the University of Cincinnati in my final quarter of my studies for a Bachelors of Urban Planning. I am now approaching the final design phases of my senior project, which involves a space you may be familiar with: Charlestown State Park, in particular, the Indiana Army Ammunition Plant.
My project entails a differing perspective on the reuse of the site in conjunction with Charlestown State Park. I am investigating alternative reuse schemes for the facility, in particular, how portions of it could be used as an extension of Charlestown State Park.
I have never hunted before, nor do I know much about hunting, which is hopefully where I could use your (collective) expertise. I am considering developing a scheme involving the annual hunting that occurs on the site. Specifically, I am interested in how I could make changes to the landscape and structures in a portion of the site to benefit the needs of hunters. Since I can speak with the actual users of the site directly through this forum, perhaps I could get the absolute best feedback.
So, as for the schemeā¦
Imagine that Charlestown State Park now allows you to hunt on portions of the 'Restricted Area', the old Indiana Army Ammunition Plant. Imagine that you are permitted to stay overnight, through a long weekend, on site in buildings that have been reused for such purposes.
I am interested in learning about what amenities you would want in the building itself. Just imagine these 'shelters' as simple hunting lodges designed to accommodate up to 6 hunters and their equipment. It is possible that they could have power, but unlikely that they would have plumbing. Water would likely have to be fetched, similar to how it is done at the state park camping grounds.
With that in mind, what features, inside and outside of the building would be desirable to you as hunters? Forgive my innocence on the topic, but for instance, gun racks/storage lockers inside, perhaps a place to clean a fresh kill, sleeping areas, etc. What would you want the 'lodge' to provide for yourself and your friends during a weekend excursion? What kind of equipment do you bring? Would this be desirable? Would an outdoor space such as a fire pit/gathering space be desirable? Be sure to think about the needs INSIDE the building as well as OUTSIDE the building.
I certainly appreciate any feedback you can provide. Do not hesitate to ask questions or to post something that may be tangentially related!
Thank you!
