Got one plot that just burnt up from lack of rain. It's only 1/4 acre in size but has 2 red oak's loaded with acorn's right beside it so I was thinking about tilling it up and sowing a mixture of oat's and wheat. It should pop right up with all the rain we've had and surely it would have time to grow before first frost I would think??? Any comment's or suggestion's?? I've got another 6 acre's of plot's on our 150 acre's consisting of mostly clover and a couple small turnip and oat's plots.

Oats will grow until a hard frost or freeze and who knows when that will be but wheat will be good till next year. If it was me I would forget the oats and plant wheat unless you already have the oats bought. h.h.

Since you live so far south oats might grow a bit longer than up here. Not sure when your first frost/freeze date is in southern Indiana. There is still a lot of time to plant wheat. With good rains and temps wheat will be up in 4-5 days. Good luck, h.h.

I planted oats and rye last weekend .... the oats are already 2 inches tall as of yesterday morning.
Didnt have a chance to see any plots that had rye in them but from what I understand both rye and wheat will germinate and grow in temps of 33* and above.
