It finally happened to me. I lost a deer last night. It has been many years and unfortunately the biggest buck I have ever shot at with a bow. I had two bucks come through. At first I only saw the first one and thought thats a decent buck I am going to take him. When I saw the second one behind him I let my draw down and waited. The second one was much bigger. I aimed and let the arrow fly. Looked like a good hit to me and the buck bolted. I waited around a half hour and got down expecting the deer to be dead. I began to look and found nothing and no arrow. Went home and came back at 10. Eventually found some blood and tracked him until 12:30. Came home and tried to sleep. Went back out at daylight hoping it had been cold enough to keep the meat good. Spent 7 hours trailing him a few more hundred yards. There was not much blood and no signs of him bedding down. Just a drop here and there and he was only bleeding out on side. Pretty discouraging way to start the season.

What Broadhead you using? ?? The old rocky mountain snypers. Had never lost a deer with them. I think I must have just hit some bone or something since I didn't get a pass through.

Bummer! Sorry to hear about that. I know its hard to do, I struggle with it all the time but, maybe if you had waited longer he may have bedded down and expired?

If you left him overnight & tracked him a few hundred yards and found only drops the next morning, my guess is this deer made it. If I had to speculate, you probably got our old friend the brisket. That kind of thing can seem like a good hit at the time and really let you down. With today's fast bows it can be hard to tell where you hit them. You made the effort, and that's what counts.

Man that sucks! Same thing has happened to me. Tucked it behind the shoulder and no penetration!
Greghopper planted the seed, so I am going to water it. I'm telling you, people put way too much faith in mechanical heads. Eventually they WILL let you down.

I skipped over this reply the first time. Some bones will stop any head, not just a mechanical. Angles can really fool ya, and deer have been known to move at the shot. It still sounds like to me this one made it.

Been there, done that...as a great deal of hunters.
Not knowing where you hit exactly doesn't help to put you mind at ease, but I agree that deer will survive to be hunted again.
Don't hang you head and get right back in the stand..

Don't hang you head and get right back in the stand.. . I lost a deer last season and was so upset I almost threw out my tag and was telling myself I wasn't going to hunt anymore that season. Instead, I dragged my butt out of bed the next morning and put a great shot on a deer that afternoon.

Is there any water nearby? I shot a buck 2 years ago and look forever for him. Went down to the river and found him floating. Might be forth a try...

Sorry to hear that 10point! Let's hope he made and will just be laid up sore for a couple of days. Good luck with the rest of your season!

10point, over on the IN forum of Bowsite, a guy named Ryan Rothaar has posted his free tracking service with his dog, just to get the dog some more work. He says he's looking for tracking opportunities w/n an hour or so of the Greencastle area, so that should put you just about within his range, and he says he might go a bit further. He posted his tracking cell #,812-241-2802, so it's no secret. He's done this in previous years as well.
I don't know him personally but he seems to be well respected and liked on that site. I'd give him a call.

I shot a few 3-D shoots with him about 10+ years ago or so. He was pretty good guy as I remember.

The old 100 yard rule should always be followed, if you dont find him in 100 yards and not sure of the shot back off until the next day. This is hard to do at times but pays off cause if you push him up you very seldom find him.
Lighted nocks are another aid to help you see where the hit was.
No matter what anyone tells you it still doesnt help that sick feeling you get when you lose a deer. Sorry and hope the next one drops at the shot. h.h.
