Thanks to the wonderful city of rochester and the Lake manitou association this years early season has been a dissapointment! An average early season would get some food in the freezer, but thanks to the slaughtering of hundreds of birds on the city golf course and all of the egg oilling this years hunts have been a bust. Anyone know how to find out exactly how many birds a permit holder has killed or how many eggs oiled? Talked to a few so called hunters that took part in the slaughter on the round barn golf course last year and was given all kinds of numbers. ( needless to say they all were targetting banded birds) I was told from 80-160 were shot last year and 200-300 eggs oiled. They were given the option of donating the meat to food banks but chose to burry them all. Wonton waste??? We as sportsmen and women should all ban together and question these tactics being used. Pretty sad that Mayor Smiley owns property that these same So called local birds used, but would not allow hunting. As for the local birds last year I shot 2 geese during early season within 8 miles of roch. One banded in Thunder Bay Ont. Canada and shot 9/13/2010. And another banded at the mouth of swan river , Ont. Canada. Shot 09/09/2010. So I wonder how many were slaughtered that were migrators??

Anti???Dont think an anti would schedule there vactions off to get out in the field to hunt. Or spend there days off getting the youth involved with hunting activities. And yes the oilling must be working. Its the needless slaughtering of birds that should stop. Funny how I've been on the site since 07 and now Im an anti. Born and raised to hunt and always will!! My whole intent was to open others eyes about how the state and feds are allowing certain people - groups to rob others of a natural resource.

Yea that sucks! When I lived and hunted around Summit Lake they did the same thing but in a State Park! I found it a bit crazy they would allow a guy to go around with vegi oil and marking flags killing all the bird eggs. It made a huge dent in the local population.
I'd be ticked off too!

So they just buried all the dead birds instead of donating the meat?

The geese killed on the golf course were thrown in a hole and burried. Was informed by one individual that he didnt agree with it but that is what the permit stated. And then he said that a couple people killing the birds were keeping meat They somehow got a permit to kill the geese on the golf course by any means all year. Claiming they are a health hazard to the golfers. As far as the egg oilling, if I understand correctly. The permit holder can only oil eggs on property he/she owns. The lake association oils eggs on private properties all around the lake. Adam Phelps used to come and band birds here, dont think he has since this has been going on. Anyways I'll get off my soapbox just wanted to bring it to everyones attention.

That stinks speckle. Had many a good hunt out there. Used to shoot lots of birds and the pressure was non existent. I dont understand why they do it. I know geese make a mess but its a state park payed for with the residence tax money. Seems to me they would manage it for all users and not just some. And honestly who did it bother? The picnic crowed? I know at some parks picnicing is big but I don't recal ever seeing that many people out at summit on a summer cook out. I suppose the goose hunters out there are a minority though because like I said the never was much competition.

I believe they got approval under the "water quality" excuse. They claimed the watershed of Summit was fairly pristine and the geese were adding too many nutrients which caused the weeds to grow out of control. My biggest beef with it was a state run park and if they needed to control the birds then they should be hunting it.
Now they "hunt" it but it is so restricted it doesn't really accomplish much at all. If I was still over there I would have liked to see them either do nothing at all, or open it up for morning drawn hunts where you could hunt ducks & geese. Give some flexibility to the hunters. That is the problem with state parks though, they don't manage wildlife or forest. It's a bad decision that should be re-evaluated in my opinion. DNR has shown they can be goose and deer hunted to help control some wildlife. I would think they could offer some type of user fee to draw in for hunting. This could help fund the park and increase use. They also need to manage the forest on these larger parks to improve habitat and use the $$$ trees to fund projects at the parks.
OK, I am off my soap box! Thanks for asking...

I think someone should mention this to the DU so we have geese and ducks to enjoy and hunt.

Not a DU concern. They won't get involved unless it involves wetlands. Federal govt gave the states authority to manage local geese as they see fit. It would take some pressure and solid facts to change any decisions. The complaint of us not having enough local geese to have good huntable numbers is not a valid argument. There are plenty of other problems associated with local geese, that is why we have Sept and Feb seasons in our state.
Also, these actions have no impact on ducks. If they are destroying duck eggs or shooting ducks out of season that is a federal violation and will get them in trouble.
