I have had, for the past two winters, a large group of gobblers messing around in the field behind the house just about every afternoon. Interestingly, there has been a coyote jacking around in broad daylight lately, usually in the grass strip that runs down the middle of the field. A couple of times he has been within a couple hundred yards of the turkeys, but both they and the dog seem to know that he doesn't have a prayer of getting close. I think it's interesting that they have this comfort zone. Anyone ever saw this?
BTW, I went out to burn trash and the stupid coyote was within about 150 yards of the house. I figured that's to close so I fired off the 22 to scare him off (he was off property, thus I couldn't kill him). Dang, can they run!

The "main" grounds i turkey hunt in Lag co is also my favorite coyote huntin spot (wierd i know). ... We generally take 4-5 yotes off this farm each year and theres always plenty plenty more to go around. But the turkeys seem to be alwasy there.... actually the guys called me after saturdays hunt and said a good 20 birds come out of the same thicket they jumped the yote in. On the last day of turkey season last year i had 1 coyote come right in by the decoy and 2 more dance around about 100 yards out... I have often wondered myself as to why the turkeys and yotes share the same habitat all year round. If your seein him that frequint.... i would either find a good trapper... or accidently have him run in front of a .223/22-250/grenade.... etc.

I witnessed something similar a couple years ago during bow season. I watched about 20 hens feeding out in a field. A yote comes out of the woods and sees them. He doesn't seem interested and is just milling around the field. He ends up working his way towards the birds. The turks dont seem to botherd and continue to feed. The closer the yote gets, the tighter the birds group together. They know he's there and are keeping tabs on him. When he gets about 30 yards from them I figure they will flush but to my surpise they all stand their ground and start moving towards the dog. He doesn't come any closer and the boss hen puts her head down and charges. The yote turns and hightails it out of there. I was pretty surpised to see this. I thoughf for sure that yote would put them all in the air. The birds continued to feed in that field the rest of the morning and I saw that yote a couple more times around the edges and ended up getting a shot at him but missed. Pretty cool hunt though!
