I turkey hunter it last year when they had the youth hunts. I live close to the Plant also. They will likely assign you an area..if you can get to the Northwest corner of Plant you're in the deer and turkey...there are some evergreens stands also on the SouthWest side of Plant that's good hunting...some big bucks in there and some exceptional grassy habitat for bedding..should be some good hunting if you can get to the back of the Plant on the very West side North is best, but that whole West side should be good.

I have found out that Newport will be hunted HARD!
There will be hunts every day from October 8th through December 18th.
There will be anywhere from 74 to 116 hunters a day hunting.
IF you were drawn for any December hunts those are MUZZLELOADER hunts.

Woody......say it ain't so. That seems like a lot of pressure. Everyday? Not just weekends? I'll be there the end of Nov. Looks like they will be hunkered down.

Guess I'll be a lucky one, my pick is for Oct 8-9. I'll give a report after the hunt.

Cross off the October 8th archery hunt. That one was taken off the board. The only lapse will be the traditional 5 days off between gun and muzzleloader.

If I had known that we would have passed. We are looking at a 4+ hour drive out there. If I wanted to hunt deer that pressured I'd stick around here.

Guys,
I don't know how big an area we are talking about and whether 116 bowhunters or 74 gun hunters is too much pressure. Having different areas does spread folks out some.
Maybe Duff can help us out here?

I just don't understand it! The way the info reads it will be two hunters per designated area and they will have that area to themselves. I spoke with a friend today who works for the DNR and he told me the weekend I'm going, they drew 58. So 116 with partners. The area map only shows 13 areas. He didn't know how they would split everyone up or how the areas would be chosen. So now it seems very messy to me. I don't think any body wants to put in the effort and time to have hunters bumping into each other in the woods.. It is 7000 acres and looks promising but it will be worth nothing quick if its hunted everyday by wondering hunters.

Looking at the rules that woody posted its says all hunters are to coordinate their locations within their areas and no one within 1200 feet of each other? Yeah right...
9. Discharge of firearms within 600 feet in the direction of roads separating hunt areas and used only by hunters, hunters vehicles and Hunt Area boundaries is strictly prohibited. Discharge of firearms within 1,200 feet between hunters is strictly prohibited. Therefore hunters within the same Hunt Area MUST coordinate their hunting locations with each hunter prior to each hunt to ensure at least 1,200 ft. separation between hunters. Discharge of firearms within 1,200 feet in the direction of structures is also strictly prohibited.
