Re-posted.
I won the custom box call in the turkey drawings. However, I feel deeply passionate about the youth being our future. I can buy any box call that I want/need. So, I'm donating the one I won to a youth. So, here are the rules to this give away.
Any youth that is a member here, or is the son/daughter of a parent member here, and that youth actually turkey hunted this year (not necessarily harvested one, but was the gunman on the hunt), age 16 or under is eligible. Birth date cut off is the deadline for this give away.
Here's what I want done. Any qualifying youth as stated above, in 500 words or less, please write what this years turkey hunting experience meant to you. Email me your brief essay at derek.sfe@verizon.net. I will read them all and pick a winner. Winner will be chosen by me, based on the content of the essay. It will be based purely on content. Since I'm no grammatical genius, so grammar and spelling errors will be completely overlooked (but do your best).
In the event that two or more essays are equally compelling, I'll randomly choose from the top finishers.
Please have your essay emailed to me no later than next Wednesday (5/23/07). I'll let everyone know who the winner is and have Woody send it to that youth.
I'd much rather see a youth benefit from a custom box call.
I will post the winning essay for all to read.

One adjustment to the contest. The youth doesn't have to be your youth. If a youth hunted with you, a member here, then he should definitely be eligible. Examples would be a nephew or neighbor kid, etc. I just want the call to go to a youth that actually hunted with a member on this forum. Get those emails to me guys.

We had numerous youth take turkeys this year and a BUNCH more hunted them. Some youths are registered members on here..
The youth did not have to take a turkey to be eligible.
It only takes a few minutes to compose a hunting essay.
Let's Git R Done and get those essays to DEC.
BTW - The box call is very, very nice..

It's crunch time guys and gals.
We've already had numerous stories on here by and about youths and their hunts - some successful and some not..
Success or not doesn't matter, it is about the HUNT.
PLEASE get them to DEC today.

Well, I had 3 essays to "judge". My intent (unpublished) from the start was that EVERY entry would get something and that is what I'm doing. I didn't make that known because I didn't want entries just so someone could get a free "something", if that makes sense. I wanted entries about what it meant to a youngster to actually go turkey hunting. I was hoping for more, but the three I got were written with much enthusiasm and fun to read. I laughed several times while reading them. All of these kids deserve a round of applause for their efforts and for being involved in hunting. So, the winner I selected for the box call was purely at my choosing. Trying to figure out how my head works and why I make the decisions I do is a lost cause, so please don't try. The other two will each get a turkey hunting DVD (new in the box) to enjoy. Our custom box call winner is ................... Caitlin Mills .... DAButcher's daughter. DAButcher, please PM Woody with the address for Caitlin's call. Congrats Caitlin and here is her winning essay, unedited, just as I received it. My dad and i went turkey hunting and it was a really good hunt because (we didn't shoot anything) but we saw 2 hens and about 6 deer! We thought 1 was a jake but it wann't we heard 2 toms! They didn't come out but i heard it but my dad didn't what a shame. There were people mushroom hunting and aftar we left the tom came out! The people were waiting for us to call back. We saw a stub of a mushroom and a lot of poison ones. Then we went by The Big Wea Creek. When we were hunting we were by a big tree and my dad showed me how to use a stone call thingy. We walked thruogh 2 big feilds i used bread bags so my boots wouldn't get wet. Then we saw a bunch of geese in a v shape flying. My dad said be quiet because sometimes geese make toms gobble. And every time we gobbled a jake call the tome would gobble we thought it was mad.And so my dad knew it gobbled i poked him! This hunt ment a real lot to me (eathan no we didnt get anything). caitlin mills

Here are the other two essays I received.
First is from Travis. Travis will get a DVD of H.S. Strut's Cuttin' & Stuttin' Classics. Travis, please PM me or email me your address.
Day #2 of youth season Me Dad Daniel Charlie was at turkey camp . At 5.30 am we step out on the porch and Dad owl hoots and about 175 yards out gobble gobble we start out toward the bird. about 75 yards.
We owl hoot, gobble gobble. gobble gobble!! There was two birds one was about 100 yards out and the other bird was to the left one about 125 yards out Me and dad went to the left and Daniel and Charlie went right. We moved toward the bird and set up on him about 35 yards. Dad starts to call, yelp, yelp, gobble gobble after a wile the bird starts to move away so we decide to move closer. Well, you know how that goes lol so we set for a little while nothing happened so we moved to a place where we heard
a couple of gobbles. We moved about 50 yards and set up Dad starts to call but nothing happened 10 minutes later out of know where a Jake came flying in! I raised up my 870 Remington . three shots i folded him. I stood up and ran to the bird!He had a 4 inch beard, little nubs of spurs and weighed 14 pounds.
Beard, thanks to dad who made all this possable
Second is from Daniel. Daniel will get a DVD of a Double Bull video with a lot of bow hunting turkey action. Daniel, please PM me or email me your address.
The story,.
...zzzzzzzzzzz....zzzzzz...zzzzzzz "Hey wake up, it's already daylight"! Those were the first words we heard on the opening day of Indiana youth Turkey season..Somehow 2 alarm clocks failed to go off. How? I don't know!LOL! We didn't have time to get mad at the alarm clocks though, we needed to get out there in the woods! Fast! So were hustling around dressing up in camo, getting our calls and all the other equiptment together..Dad steps out on the porch looking into German Ridge-(Hoosier national forest) and owl hoots a could of times. GOBBLE GOBBLE GOBBLE! They were hot!!!
Travis quickly gets the idea that he could have all of them turkeys to himself while me and Dad went off into other property that we had planned to hunt. So he immediatly hits the woods and we hit the road! Once we got the the property we was hunting on it is by now completly daylight/ Dad owl hoots a couple of times and we hear 1 or 2 way off...We make our way in their direction, once we get into the woods a little way we started hearing more and more gobbling..From different directions! Now it sounds like were just in the middle of 'em! In fact we spooked a turkey, not sure if it was a hen or not. Knowing that there were a bunch of turkeys there we decided to make our way to higher ground to try to get set-up and just wait one out.
After staying there for probably an hour with turkeys gobbling below us pretty constant..Wondering why none of them would make our way up the hill to us..We figured that they had got hung up at a small creek at the edge of a little field.. We got together and decided to circle around and maybe get on him down there by the field...The place we were hunting is now being logged so we used the roads to get around most of the time.
We got as close as we thought we could with out spooking him but it was so thick where we were we couldn't hardly see anything..Dad is yelping on the slate call and a Tom is answering every time! Dad instructs me to go over to a tree like 12 feet from the one we was sitting beside and try to get a good look at the field where we thought he was..I get on my hands and knees and as quietly as I could crawled to it while Dad yelped to cover up the noise I was making. Once I got there I still couldn't see the field very good. But We just couldn't get any closer!
I sit down and all Is quiet......Too quiet...Did we spook it.....we must have spooked it....it's over......Wait! A little bit of movement caught my eye to my right. A turkey! I couldn't tell if it was a tom or not so I positioned my gun and waited for it to come out into the open..When It did I seen that it was a silver/white hen! Just slowly making it's way along that little creek I was talking about. About the time the hen is in good view I spot movement in the field! The Tom following her! If all goes right she'll lead him right into my shooting lane!
I am watching the hen at the same time and I see her perk her head up like you always see 'em do when they see somehting they don't like..Putt..Putt..Putt..The Tom freezes..She did that a coulple of minutes and begins to slowly make her way forward..Cautiously I see the Tom to start her way too..All I need is a few more steps and I'll have a shot! Sure enough he crossed that little creek and poppes his head up where I have a clear 20 yard shot..BOOM! He drops but jumps right back up and begins to run! In desperation I shoot again! When I seen it keep running I thought it was over. But I jumped out of my seat and ran its way! I was happy to find that it only ran a short distance and folded up....whew! My hunt was over..Sorry for being so long...But I'm still pumped!LOL!
Thanks to my Dad who did the calling..And really helped out on killing this bird..
Well, my Turkey season is over..But it was a blast!
