Dad has decided he wants to put 2 smaller food plots out for this fall. Would we have success planting this late? Its in a overgrown pasture that acts as a huge travel corridor with a big cedar thicket/ bedding area on the south end. A smoking spot for gun and Muzzy season. What would be best to plant? Both plots might be 15-20 yards wide by 75-90 yards long. Thanks

This late, anything you plant would be a crap shoot. I don't normally use beans in a food plot, but desperate times call for desperate measures. I would plant beans now and make plans for a better planting next year. Since it is a pasture, I would stick with row crops. The deer probably already have clovers and alfalfas to graze on. I would plant corn next year.

TURNIPS. I plan mine 1st August depending on weather. Also FORAGE OAT"S are good for hunting plot's. Both are great late season food source's. U probably don't have time for soil test so I would put at least 600lbs lime per acre and 300 lbs 15-15-15 fertilizer per acre. Next year I would soil test for sure to see what your soil need's. Plant it and they will come. Good luck.

Lots of stuff you could plant. Beans would be good for forage but you won't get many bean pods planting this late. Consider clover, rape or turnips.

I was told by a deer hunter that was on the promotional circuit that a good shot plot planting was Oats planted in the 3rd week of August, followed 2 weeks later by an overseeding of clover. I tried it and the deer loved it.

Thanks guys. With the lack of rain I haven't planted. Being as though I'm off work next week I'll give it a try. Think I'm gonna go w the oats and top dress w clover.

Oats come up real fast if the conditions are right. Ive planted oaks in the past and they will be up in 2 days with a good rain. If you want to turn that plot into a clover plot, wait until the oats are about a foot tall and then seed clover in it. Next year you will have a nice stand of clover where the oats are now. h.h.

H.H. my oat's down here won't get 4" tall before deer have em snipped to the ground. Got about 6 acre's in plot's. Mostly clover around 4 acre's, 1 acre turnip's, 1 acre oat's. By end november they will all be eaten to bare dirt.

Trust me we have killed a ton of doe's over last 6 year's since i moved down here. Now our problem is good as I see 2 or 3 buck's per doe. Not uncommon to see 7 or 8 buck's and 3 or 4 does per day while hunting. last season we only took 3 does off farm because we wern't seeing that many. But I saw 28 different buck's!!!!!! Killed a 130's class with bow.

You could try the fence system thats suppose to keep deer off the plot until you want them there. Might help your hunting in late season.
Up here in the NE there is nothing but crop fields after crop fields so the deer really dont hit my plots until they get pressured in gun season. They do eat in them early but really hit them later. Good luck with your plots, h.h.

You hit nail on the head. I don't have any crop's within 3 miles of my property. So whatever we plant is a magnet.
