The only thing they'll care about while serving those days in jail is that they're in jail, they've never cared about seasons in the first place, it will teach them nothing. A sentence of 360 days total, even combined with the fines and other requirements, was far too light in view of the damage they did. When poaching is institutionalized within a group it never goes away, once they're out of jail when the sentence ends they'll go right back to poaching.

Sadly-I think I'll have to agree with Kevin...the bit about the boy in pajamas saying what he did just goes to show that the indoctrination runs pretty deep.

The funny thing about this is, this sentence was handed down as a plea agreement. Can you imagine what it could have been had they gone to trial.

Considering the egregrious nature of the offenses, and the generational disregard for the law, if I had been the prosecutor I would've denied any request for a plea deal. And since their friends and neighbors almost certainly had to have known what was going on the scope of the investigation would've been much greater. This should have been prosecuted as a RICO case, complete with total forfeiture of assets and a lengthy prison sentence for all. Poaching will never stop until the risk far exceeds the reward.

I completely agree Kevin.
I have known of people that have been in a situation where taking a wild animal out of season quite literally was a life saving event, poaching at this level is too the extreme.
In Indiana, violating game laws is infractions or misdemeanors. I had heard of non-residents hunting deer without a license because the fine if they got caught was less than the price of the license.
It works the same with game laws as any other. The fact that it is illegal won't be a deterrent for people, only severe mandatory punishments will. Take speeding for instance. If the base speeding ticket was $100 for 1 to 5 miles over the limit plus court cost, and then $50 for each mile per hour above 5 over the limit, there would be much less people speeding, which would result in less accidents and less highway fatalities.
