Have any of you ever planted sugar beets? I have been told that deer love them, but I've never seen or heard of any being planted around here in Warrick Co.. Thanks, Tom

Ive never been able to find seed in small quanities and you have to dig them up for deer to eat. Sugar beets are hard as a rock. They get about the size of a medium cabbage head.
Plus I think they need colder climates to grow good. h.h.

I've read elsewhere that the brassica type plants are excellent for deer plots due to the fact that they tend to be bitter tasting until hit by a good frost and that once the frost hits they get sweet and the deer WILL dig them up even in frozen ground!! www.whitetailstewards.com/articlesonsite/deerhabitatmanagement/brassicas.htmOOPS!! Sorry to go off topic! I THOUGHT beets were part of the brassica family...

never planted sugar beets but I have planted purple top turnips. The deer dig them up and eat them in the winter. Last year they ate the tops which they have never done in my little plot before. They are stupid easy to grow and Rural king sells small bags of seeds for $2 or $3.

Finished up the last of four plots of soybeans yesterday, finally got dry enough.
Thinking about planting some turnips also. When is best time frame for planting them?

Finished up the last of four plots of soybeans yesterday, finally got dry enough. Thinking about planting some turnips also. When is best time frame for planting them? Up here in N.E. Indiana I plant them mid August. Since it is usually pretty dry in August I watch the weather and try and plant a day or two before a predicted rain. Two years ago we had a wet fall and some of the turnips got to be 5 lbs., last year the drought hit and my turnips got not much bigger than radishes. In my opinion the two best fall and winter plots you can plant for my area are turnips and winter wheat. This combo has work very well for me the last several years. h.h.
