My daycare called and told us that they now have to periodically weigh all the kids and report the results to the state. Anything aberrant ends up with Child Protective Services.
Now I can hear all the idiots saying, "but if your kid is fat, that is child abuse!"
Stop and think: What chart are they using? The one my child's doctor uses rates him at the 75th percentile for six year olds. Yet he is not fat, just a big kid. Is being heavier than 75% of six year olds automatically fat?
Remember that absurd height/weight scale they use for adults? It rated Evander Holyfield at peak fighting size as "obese."
If a kid is fat, why is that? It's probably because they eat to much. But they can also be sick or on medicine that makes them gain weight.
Just wanted you parents to be aware.

CPS recently poked their nose into my eldest son's daughter's weight because they said her doctor said that she was underweight. She was born a super preemie and has difficulty with eating solids, though with ongoing training she's doing better. His doctor recently ordered him to fatten her up or be reported to CPS for not feeding her enough!

My wife owns & operates a daycare (for 17 years now) and hasn't heard of this law...although she does admit anything is possible. I'm more inclined that you have a noisy provider that may just think your kid is fat and is hoping she might scare you into thinning him/her down. But, that's just me thinking out loud here.

Naw, trust me, we know them and know them well. And as I mentioned before, my kids aren't fat. Besides, this lady doesn't mince words...if she wanted to tell me something, she would! She's also pretty upset about it. I have been searching the net for this regulation, but I think it is new enough that it hasn't hit the press yet. The agency that licenses daycare providers sent the forms, and they require the provider to weigh the kids at regular intervals. If the kid is deemed obese, they notify CPS. That's pretty much all I know. My daycare just got the forms. Perhaps your wife hasn't got them yet?

Some kids, like adults, are big boned and will never be within the tolerence of the "weight guides"

I think this one is failing the funk test. There are 200 million web sites and there is not a single this anywhere..... except here.

Weight is a huge issue now days. I have to weigh my class at the end of the year every year. This year I had 5 kids over 200 lbs. I am 6'5" 200 lbs. One girl was 265. These kids never play outside, and eat junk. This is all 5th graders.

Can you ask your provider is she's participating in a special licensing program? Indiana Healthy Inituative maybe? It's a fairly new thing --- possibly around 2008, that some are participating in, but it's not a state law mandate.
My wife is part of the area association and we'll be making her contacts early in the week to verify, but she's doubtful such a program exists at the state level, but she does say nothing surprises her anymore with all the crazy laws & regulations they put in place year after year -- most just to squeeze some more money out of the licenses daycares.

Ok...I finally talked to her myself. This program is a "trial" program ( like the OBR? lol ) that is already running in some form in 23 states. It came from the Health Department, as I understand it. Participating ( as of now it is voluntary ) daycares record the weight vs hieght of the chillun periodically and send the data to the state. When a child is deemed obese the state follows up with the parents. What this means here I do not know; but in other states the kid police come and talk to you about what is in your cabinets and inspect the offending child. I was incorrect in thinking it was already a done deal as opposed to a trial thing. Still, it is worrysome. As an infant my child was "obese" according to the chart for a long time. The doctor told my wife not to worry, as the baby was just big, not fat at all. But how is some bureaucrat in an office miles away going to read those results when the baby isn't there in front of them? She sent back the forms and declined to participate. The daycare is fully liscensed and gets the highest rating, if that helps. I think she just runs a regular daycare; nothing unusual.

I really hope this kind of trial program loses funding........ridiculus. As the mother of a extremely thin son who can out-eat a 400 # grown man and a heavier son with a bigger frame who only eats a normal amount, I know that weight is a individual basis and some kids do outgrow weight issues. Government poking their nose into size is a bad bad idea.

This also be about underweight children - you know, the ones mother and father don't feed because they are drunk.

Yep, I just stopped in to let you know that it's what my wife was thinking...probably the Healthy Initiative trying to drum up support for their effort.
