Young hunter still in hospital Times-Mail
WILLIAMS — Dakota L. Kinser of Williams remained in an Indianapolis hospital Wednesday. Kinser, 14, was listed in fair condition at Methodist Hospital Wednesday, according to a hospital spokeswoman.
He was shot in the thigh on Sunday while turkey hunting.
“He stated that he was turkey hunting by himself Sunday morning, and that he had shot at a turkey and missed with a double-barrelled 12-gauge shotgun,” according to Indiana Conservation Officer Mark Farmer.
“Apparently he was going to return home. He had ridden from his home to his hunting spot on an ATV (all-terrain vehicle). As he stated, he was mounting or getting on the ATV when the gun discharged, at this point for a still unknown reason.”
The boy told officers the safety on the gun was on, Farmer said.
Kinser rode the ATV back to his home, and was transported by personal vehicle to Bedford Regional Medical Center.
Officers want to examine the gun when Kinser returns home, to see if it was functioning properly.

Too bad. I didn't think a double barrel had a safety? (Elmer fudd styles ) Even if it had a safety, I don't think it failed. That's pretty rare.........

Thats horrible news, Miss Tiffany and I will keep young Dakota and his family in our thoughts. Isnt 14 awful young to be out all on his own and with a double barrel to boot? He must be a heck of a young man. Hope he recovers well and returns to hunt again, like I said before at 14 to be doin it all on his own, he must have a deep love for the outdoors. Thank Ya'll for making us aware of his situation, please keep us posted

Children, under the age of 16 should not be allowed to hunt un-supervised....IMO.....let alone, they shouldnt be riding a ATV un-supervised! While riding a ATV your gun is suposed to be "cased"......so if he put the gun in a case prior to mounting the ATV, how did he shoot himself? A double barrel for turkey? My prayers are with him, however I would like to have a chat with the kids parents!!!!

That is sad, and I hope the best for the boy and his family. But like was already stated, the gun is supposed to be incased, and unloaded to be legal, and safe. I was hunting alone at that age, but my dad was on the army pistol team, and I started shooting at 6 years old. I think it is something that has to be decided from person to person. Some kids are mature enough, and experienced enough at that age to hunt alone in my opinion. However some kids that are 18 or 19 are not, it just depends on the individual IMO.

It's a bad deal..It only takes a split second for a life to be changed forever.I don't know the kid,but I'm assuming he took hunter education.Do they teach gun and ATV safety in those classes?I haven't taken them yet,but I need to.

Isnt 14 awful young to be out all on his own and with a double barrel to boot? I think so...if I were his mother, I'd absolutely insist that he be supervised by his father. Regardless, I hope this kid is recovering well.

When I was 14 years old my father would drop me off at our old river camp before daylight and wouldnt pick me up until after dark during archery season or squirrel season.
I would hunt in the morning, go back to our camper in the afternoon and fix myself something to eat, and then hunt the evening till dark.
I am 32 now so this is about 18 years or so ago.
When I was younger than 14 our fathers would drop my cousin and me off before daylight to gun hunt deer. We wouldnt be out all day .... they would pick us up 3 or 4 hours after light.
Accidents happen to young and old alike. If this young man was mature enough to make his way back home after suffering a gunshot wound I would say he is mature enough to hunt by himself.

If this hunter shot himself while mounting or riding a ATV, I would say HE WAS NOT MATURE ENOUGH TO BE HUNTING BY HIMSELF!

As was stated, many sides to this one. The age of the person has no bearing here. Adults have done much worse. Accidents are just that; accidents. Anyone can, and everyone does, have a lapse of intelligence on occasion. I was hunting with my family and/OR friends of similar age at 12 or 13. Been shooting guns all my life, starting with a red ryder at about 5 or 6. I personally know adults I would not trust with a red ryder. Age isn't the issue. Here is a thought. Kid is tired and hungry. He has no intention of riding his atv with a loaded gun. Simply sits down on it because it is MUCH more comfortable than the ground he has been sitting on all morning waiting on a bird. All he figures on doing is sitting down, unloading his gun and putting it in a case. In attempting to step over the seat, his foot catches on a weed and he is thrown slightly off balance. Just enough to bang the gun against the atv enough to jar an old sear off engagement. Every upland game hunter runs the risk of stumbling with a loaded gun with every step he takes. Not stupid, not too young to be unsupervised, just another rare accident that will happen on occasion no matter HOW safely a person hunts. Or, could have been a kid goofing off, riding his atv with the gun loaded and resting over his shoulder, barrel down and sitting on his leg. Who knows. He has my best wishes, either way.
