My 6 year old son has been feeling sick at night for a while. A blood test showed elevated liver studies so the doctor called us and said, "Go to Riley Hospital... you need to leave within the hour."Talk about getting your attention. Well, the drive up wasn't too bad until the city...the exits weren't well marked at all but we trusted the GPS and got to the giant medical complex, where we ran into trouble. There is Wishard, St. Francis, IU medical, Riley, and a host of other facilities---not to mention a new Wishard under construction. We drove around and around, until a compassionate nurse jumped in our car and directed us there. As for my son, he has gall stones.  He will need surgery, but due to the holiday weekend we will have to go all the way back to Madison and then return later.  Praise the Lord it's not something worse! I'm typing here on the "family lounge" computer. This really is a top notch place. I'll try and update ASAP. |

They are going to do a test tommorrow to determine how inflamed the surrounding area is, and then decide to operate or not.

Well, we were told that we were in line for surgery today, much to our relief....than I walked out of the room and another doctor tells me that we will have to do outpatient. EEEEEK!
Let's hope he's mistaken!

After performing gall bladder surgery, on a six year old; I'd think he ought to stay a couple of days in the Hospital for observation with follow-up blood studies being the norm. ~ my opinion. |

I'm pretty sure it has become routine for adults to do the outpatient surgery (laparoscopically, of course) when they are eligible. Not sure how common it is for youngsters. I know it sounds scary, but I'd take it as an indication that the docs figure him to be a very good candidate for a trouble-free recovery. Never heard any accusations of Riley giving any kid the bum's rush for economic reasons. Pretty sure that's the LAST place that would happen.
Riley does do some wonderful work. We had a program in the IBA for many years that encouraged local affiliated clubs to hold one "Riley Shoot " a year, with the proceeds donated to Riley Hospital. Most clubs put it on their shoot calendars as such, and lots of us tried to always hit the Riley Shoots that were within driving range. A couple of clubs I know of did two a year for several years, and often donated the entire intake for the day, including the food and drink concessions. Totalled well into five figures over the years that the program was in operation. One of the programs for kids that I was very proud of the organization and my fellow members for supporting while I was a member.
Best of luck to your little guy. Mine underwent some emergency surgery when he was that age, too. Everything came out fine, but I was nervous as a cat at the time, also.

Your son is at the best place he can be. As has been said, top notch place with the best care in the business. We have had a few family members and friends with kids at Riley. Nothing but great things to say about the care received at Riley.

There is nothing that hurts worse, or makes you feel so helpless, than your child in pain. In my opinion he is in great hands there. You are in my prayers.

Well, they decided to take the gallbladder today and did so...however, a bile duct is still blocked. I understand that it could be a stone or just inflammation. Another ultrasound in the morning will hopefully determine which. He's still in a lot of pain from the infection and the irritated liver that resulted from the backup.
Very impressive staff. It's re-assuring to know you are in one of the greatest hospitals in the country. One bizzare note... they often do not communicate with each other that well. Three times one doctor has told us out of date information; for example: one doctor came in and told us they found gall stones. Seconds later another came in and said they were pretty sure that it was a viral infection of the liver.. (previous theory.)
Not a real big deal but a little jarring. Still a very impressive group of folks.

Sas-our prayers are with you! Danf can tell you about his cousin (my niece) that literally owes her life to Riley and the doctors there. She was diagnosed with an aneurysm on her aorta when she was six weeks old-the docs at Riley basically did some groundbreaking surgery and repaired it. She's had to go back in once in the last 29 (?) years for repair of scar tissue. She's now married, has two kids and teaches special ed....obviously I can't say enough good things about Riley!

UPDATE:
John had an ultrasound to determine if his main bile duct still has a stone in it, but naturally things are moving slowly on Easter Sunday. Hopefully we will know tomorrow!

My prayers are with you. My 15 yr old had to have the nuss procedure this month to repair his chest (at Riley) so I have an idea of the stress of having your child so ill. Most of the staff at Riley are AMAZING, and it is a wonderful place.

I hope your son is doing well as you are awaiting the results of the latest test.
I worked at Riley for 4 years doing cancer research--it really is an amazing place.

The ultrasound showed a stone still in the duct. Today or tomorrow he will have a type of endoscopy done to remove it.

Holy cow, that is a wild ride. Glad it is just his gall bladder. That is a relief for sure. Here's to a speedy recovery!
