WOO-HOO... I got my seedling trees planted Sunday. The wifey and my buckaroos got them all down and hopefully in a few short years we'll see something. We ordered 5 "wildlife" and 1 "nut" packet(s) from Vallonia nursery for about 700 trees total. Because of the hill-side and wet weather we hand planted them. Dog got about 10 ticks, wife got 2, kids 3 apiece I've remained tick free so far. This was something have have never done before and was hard but fun stuff. As soon as the weather dries up I'll rent the WSG drill for the Soil and Water conservation district and my WHIP project will be done.

Done the same thing a few years ago...hope you used tubes for the trees...I did not and lost every darn tree I planted ( over 200 trees)...the deer ate every one fo them in lss than a year....alot were white pines and wildlife mix tree packets from DNR nursery...Made me sick all the work we done planting those trees and lost every last one to deer browsing...BUY THE TUBE PROTECTORS!!

Agree with ridgerunner on this one... I planted about 100 trees in my grandpa's woods two years ago... About 15-20 Oaks have made it. I also planted a dozen apple trees. And the only ones that made it were the ones I put fence around. But the deer have bent the fence in more than one place to get at the trees... But so far so good. BB

Well the USDA guy just did an on-sie inspection of my WHIP project and all was good. The trees are hard to find but they are there. Weeds have over taken them but, he said that was an OK thing. Apperhently, the deer will have a hard time finding them as well. The ground was pretty much bare when we planting the trees so the weeds are high-ish but not thick. Spacing didn't happen as is does in the books.
As far as the WSG's I did rent the drill and well lets just say sometimes..every know and then a hitch-pin can pop-out. Well, I caught the $12,000-$15,000 drill out of the corner of my eye going down an embankment just after I crossed a set of RR tracks. The drill was OK no damage thank god. Got to my place got the tractor out of the barn, shut it down for a moment...went to hook-up the drill..Starter clutch went out..On the way home (100 miles one way) Got a ticket. This a true story..
After that I borrowed a hand-seeder from the SWCD, sat on the tailgate of the truck while my son drove around, cranking it out while dragging a home made drag. Then we drove around some more to "truck-o-pack" the seed. The soil was prepped by round-up and light discing. Anyway, seemingly it worked, I have Black-eye Susans, Gamma (Gramma)? Oats, and some type of Illinois flower showing. The custom seed mix had about 10-12 different flowers with I thinnk three types of grasses. Hopefully next spring it will "POP". BTW the USDA guy was happy, so I'm happy. Sorry this story is so long but, thats the way it was.

Oh and BTW if you ever do plant alot of seedling trees don't be a cheap a$$ like me and not buy the markers.. Because in a year you may need to know wheere they are. I imagine it's alot easier without the briars.
