I have had the itch to buy a gun now for some time. Decided it will be a 1911 in .45 but really might go with something completely differnt like a Glock or XD and that would probably be in 9mm. I am cheap to the bone but I really don't care for lower grade guns if I can swing it. Any advice out there on what to look for in a used 1911? I am starting my search at the lower end Kimber/Colt/Springfields at least around $800 max. Then of course if I happen upon a glock, ruger, XD/XDm in 9mm for the right deal I will probably end up with one of those and then in another few years find my way back to the market for the 1911. Once again any advice on what to look for? What to avoid is helpfull.
I know some of this is Ford vs Chevy so if you tell me to avoid brand "X" please give me a valid reason ;D

The beautiful thing about a 1911 is just about all the parts are interchangeable/milspec. You can always start cheap and just build it up as you go. For the amount of money you are looking to spend a Colt or Kimber will most likely have to be a used gun. Even Springfields are getting up around 800 OTD for a new one by the time you pay the taxes and buy a box or two of ammo.
In my opinion, and that's what it is, it's really hard to be a Colt 1911 out of the box and I'm not a big Colt fan but that 1911 is really hard to beat out of the box. Springfields have come a long way and will probably be the best buy for the money. Kimbers are nice but wow are they pricey for what they are. For the amount of money Kimbers are going for I think I would put a little more with it and get a Wilson Combat. Again, that's all speculation and opinion. Whatever you decide it's hard to beat a 1911. The platform has been around for 100 years or so and still going strong. You can't say that about to many firearms. The fact that's it is a handgun platform is even rarer. Good Luck!

One word of warning; the earlier Kimber's run great, the newer ones seem to be more hit or miss. I'm inclined to agree about the Springfields.

Save yourself some headache and some money and go with a Beretta 96, it is a .40 or you can go with the 92 series in the 9mm, imo for the money it's the best gun without going into the thousand range for a nice kimber, Sig also has a 1911 that I hear decent things about as well

The Beretta's and Glock's don't fit me well at all; you will find we are all different. I've had a few 1911's including a couple of the newer Kimbers that weren't reliable enough to suit me and a Springfield compact that wouldn't feed ball. I've come to the place with 1911's that I don't truxt anything smaller than a Commander and really prefer the 5" guns. The one I still have is a real Hienz 57 gun, built up mostly from parts a gunsmith friend of mine & I had laying around. As long as I keep Shooting Star mag's out of it it runs like a top. I've had it in some form for close to 30 years, won't part with it. Having said that my current carry gun is a M&P9C; best shooting I've ever done with a compact. Had a couple of guys out shooting last weekend, they tried a few mags each with it and then I loaded it with a half a dozen rounds and put half in the x ring and half in the 10 ring of a B27 reduced target from 10 yards as fast as I could keep a sight picture. They stared at me and one of them asked "What kind of sight picture are you using", it's nice to find a gun that works for you. I promise you there are plenty of good quality guns I can't do that with - you just have to find what works for you.

If you are considering a 1911 for everyday carry I would suggest a Colt lightweight commander in stainless. This pistol will come with everything needed on a defensive pistol. Good sights, a good easy to reach thumb safety, a grip safety that won't bite your hand, and chambered in .45 ACP. I've seen these new at the gunshows for around $850.00.

Duff I've shot the XD's and I have been quite impressed. 1911's are nice as well though, so I'm not really much help.
Get both.

If you can find one, the earlier Norincos are Mil-spec and have a very, very good reputation. They usually go for around $500. As Dave said above the M&P is a very good CC gun as well, and one that also happens to fit my hand very well. Another nice thing about the M&P is the ability to swap out the barrel for a different caliber and the extra barrels are less than $75 a piece through Midway. I also like the XD subcompact, which gives you the option of extra concealability with the flush fit mag or extra controlability with the extended mag. The extended mag grip is really nice and fits my large hands well.
