I own a Rossi "Puma" lever action in .44-40 Win. My carbine (a Winchester M-92 Clone) is very accurate & better if you reload using 200 grain Hornady XTP bullets or soft points. The .44-40 is not as powerful as a .44 Magnum, but is more pleasant to shoot & will still take a Deer well out to around 75 yards. It is also very accurate with cast bullets too.

What kind of group could I expect at 75 yards? Thanks for the info

If your eyesight is better than mine, then you can expect 75 yard groups of 1.5" to 2" with open sights. On my Rossi; I made the rear sight a little deeper and slightly wider with a fine file & this helped my sighting. I sighted my .44-40 Rossi Puma about 1 inch high @ 50 yards and then made adjustments to where it hit dead on at 75 Yards. I believe you can have Williams "Firesights" installed and this would help as well.

I doubt I have better eyesight. I am more curious about the accuracy of the gun. I'm sure it exceedes my ability. I probably wouldn't shoot over 50yds. Thanks again for the info..

If your set on the 44wcf go for it. Keep in mind that cartridges are hard to find. If you reload, the brass does not hold up well because it is half the thickness of 44 mag brass. Even with light loads the brass is fragile at the mouth. With lead you need to bell the mouth alot to keep the mouth from crushing. If you anneal your brass it gets very soft and crushes easy. If you don't it gets brittle fast and splits. I shoot my 73 winchester alot and its a hoot. When I shoot the 44 mag I use the same load data that I use for the 44wcf. I found some old brake rotors that make nice targets hanging off a chain.

Brass & ammo can be found at places like Midway & they also have bullets both lead & jacketed.
