I just thought I'd post a quick note and pic here on gun dogs holding their birds on point. As some of you know, working dogs in the field can be a pure joy and at other times it can be frustrating. I guided a small hunt yesterday, one hunter, and only 6 chukar. This guy was a pleasure and he was all about watching the dogs work. I worked both my dogs for a while and then suggested that I would like to work Duke, my GWP alone. My purpose was to spend some time getting Duke to hold his birds. Obviously, the hunter had paid for the hunt and this was up to him. He thought this would be great and wanted to watch me "train for a bit" as he is thinking on getting his own gun dog. So, I say a huge thank you to John! What a pleasure to watch Duke. We had 4 chukar left and he pointed/retrieved all 4 birds. The coolest part was that I had Duke hold point for at least 3 minutes on each bird! The hunter was so impressed and I must say I was, too. I even took the liberty to let the hunter walk up to Duke at one point and gently pet him while whispering an affirmative "Whoa" and "Good Boy" as a way for him to learn a bit by participating with me. This is one of the smallest hunts I've done in a while and yet very rewarding. Here is a pic of Duke looking all regal with his birds at the end of the day:
