I have a .22-250 but don't have it dialed in yet so I bought some 00 buckshot 3" mag 15 pellets to use my shotgun until I am comfortable with my rifle. My question is what choke should I use. I shoot a Mossberg 500 w/ 28" vent rib barrel. It has imp cyl, modified and full choke inserts. Which one should I use and what is my effective range? I'm new to coyote hunting but been traping them for awhile.

Improved cylinder, around 50 yards.

Improved cylinder, around 50 yards. You might hit him with one or two pellets at that distance.

I'd use your full choke, and would be hesitant over 50 yds. Your best bet is to hit the patterning board. You'll want a lot of shot within at least a 20" circle. That will tell you your max distance. You should pattern it anyway if you haven't already, they don't always shoot straight. #2 buck will give you more pellets per shell.

Mod or full will work with full giving you the maximum range for killing. While 00 is good #4 buck is better for yote hunting. Gives you twice as many shot and range is almost the same. h.h.

Thanks, I do plan on shooting a target first. Just thought I'd see what others have used. I know with steel shot using a full choke can sometimes blow out the pattern. I haven't done alot of hunting with buckshot.

I've found that even with a full choke 00 buckshot spreads entirely too wide for coyote hunting. You MIGHT hit the dog with one pellet at 50 yds. MAYBE. They make a load called "dead coyote" It's #4 buck NOT #4 shot, there's a difference. I've heard reports of 80 yd. kills with it.
