Hello all, My name is Joseph or Joe either is fine. I am 60 yrs old soon to retire from the Chicago Police Department as a forensic investigator and have been hunting for 50 years, mostly deer and some turkey. The honest reason I joined this board is to help my 13 yr old granddaughter Madison. She and sister and mom just moved to Valparasio after mom married a man there. Just after that the Marines figured they needed him in the middle-east. I have no knowledge about hunting in Porter county Indiana area and Madion just got a bow for Christmas from me and she would like to find places she can hunt (after finishing the hunter safety course) near home. I would be with her and purchase a non-resident license if permitted to hunt with her. If not the point is for her to hunt and I will just tag along for safety. Madison is also proficient with the black powder rifle and would use it if possible.

Welcome aboard!
In case you're not aware, Indiana now offers an apprentice license that anyone who hasn't had hunter safety can buy. You are allowed to by the license three times in your lifetime, and after that you must be hunter ed certified if born after 1986(I believe). It's a good way to see if newbies are really going to like hunting before going thru the hunter ed classes.
I'll bet you have some interesting stories from your career!

After 40 years there are a few, some funny and some sad, and of course the stupid ones. Is there a get together place or meeting time and place. I am really pumped about this group and kids hunting. I will check on the permit, I hope she gets the safety course done. She is working on the online one, or do you think going to bass pro and doing it over the weekend is better?

IHMO, the face to face hunter ed has got to be better, simply because the students can ask questions. Sometimes, due to time constraints, you have to do things online rather than face to face.

Joe I recently took my 10yr old daughter to the Hunter ed class in Brown County and I believe the class is the way to go!! My daughter learned alot and I learned a few things myself!! If you are looking to get your grandaughter out in the woods to hunt deer I may be able to accomedate you and her. The only deal is I live in Southern Indiana about 45min south west of Indy! If thats something you are willing to do send me a message and we can get together to set something up! I would like to have another girl for my daughter to hunt with! I have a blind, Buddy stand, and many nature made blinds as well! I hunt on about 500+ privatly owned acres that has plenty of deer! So .... send a message if its not to far for you to travel! Looking forward to hear from you!

welcome!
The face to face hunter ed class is much in my opinion...hunting with an apprentice license is an option before she completes the course though

We liked the hunter ed class, will be repeating it in future for my youngest son since he didn't pass first time. My hubby and I learned a few things also by going along.
