I've taken some vacation time to travel the state lately with only mild success. Yesterday I worked my way home by making stands in 8 counties. About 45 miles shy of the house I remembered a farm that haunted me earlier this season. On opening night (10/15) I called a deep throated bowler in from about 800 yards only to snap the trigger on an empty chamber. After a little work I brought him back and my partner got antsy and missed him. Last night I put a little extra boot leather into positioning us beside this big male. I got him vocal and repositioned twice before applying the sound that I thought would bring him running. Ten minutes into the stand four coyotes appeared to my right... it was obvious which one I wanted first. I believe I even verbalized an expletive when he stopped broadside and looked over at me. I dumped him at 40 yards and moved over to his adult female companion. She went down but the pups left quickly. After extensive work with the howler, one pup did come back but we couldn't get a gun on him. What do you think he weighs? The female on the ground is an average 2yr old.
