Hello people, last week I was treated to a pheasant hunt at a wisconsin shooting preserve. I had a great time since it took me back.Im really an avid waterfowler but I used to hunt quail and pheasant a bit since I was a kid but due to dwindlingbird numbers I gave it up.Anymore Im glad to just see birds when rabbit hunting(I let them go of course just to keep them around). Anyhow i was told you can still hunt put and takes in Indiana till end of march at private shooting preserves. Just wondering if anyone here had any comments on a few good ones they might have been too. However I kind of question the ethics of it but I don t see it as being a bad thing. It beats shooting up whats left of the wild birds. Anyway whatever input any of you might have would be appreciated. thanks ( p.s.)it sure felt good to shoot some ringnecks again and it was my first time hunting over an english pointer that was an awesome dog.

There is a nice one over by Wyatt, In., which is about 10 miles south of Mishawaka. I have hunted it a few times and it comes as close to hunting wild birds as I have ever come across. The phone number is 574-633-4982, it is called Maier Pheasant Farm. It is supposed to be the first and oldest pheasant hunting preserve in the state.

From where you are, this is probably you're best shot. As you'll note if you read through a lot of threads in the here in upland section, I've guided all over the state. Glad you enjoyed the English Pointer. That's my world, too along with my GWP. As a matter of fact, I just got in from working my Elhew (English Pointer) pup. You'll find most preserves in Indiana have fairly decent birds. You're bound to come across a few batches that just don't fly the best - but that's what you have to live with as far as pen raised birds. I primarily guide at Royal Flush Enterprises just a bit north of Terre Haute. Here is a recent post: huntingindiana.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=uplandbirdsandhuntingdogs&action=display&thread=34881We are seeing quite a resurgence in preserve hunts here as it is increasingly difficult to get out on wild birds. Most people are finding it tougher due to time off, fuel prices, travel and lodging expense... Feel free to PM me if you're ever down this way and we'll set something up if you'd like.

thanks for the info gentlemen. I ll be getting ahold of my hunting partner to see when we can get this going. However highcottonguide a few more questions ,keeping in mind my hunt in wisconsin was a treat at no cost to me I was told to give the handler a gratuity which is fine. My question is what is etiquette amount I gave him $30 for half day or I guess 3 1/2 hrs . Does that seem about right or did I stiff him. Looking for an honest answer, being that s the business your in thanks. P .S. what kind of dog is that in your pic with the pointer

It usually depends on how many hunters are in the party. Average tips are $20 per hunter. If the group has 4 hunters, they sometimes pool up for $40-50 total. The dogs in the link above are Duke my German Wirehaired Pointer and Cotton my English Pointer.

I worked independently and I charged $35 for a half day and $60 for a full and also received a small amount per bird released. I never expected a tip from any clients directly from the preserve since a lot of them were unfamiliar with the customs of using guides. A lot of people simply don't know and others had spent more than they could really afford anyway. I used to see that a lot with family and friends that would get together and do a hunt around the holidays and progressively each year it became harder and harder financially. Sad, because many times it might be the only time they get to spend with each other in the field all year. Preserve hunting is damn expensive. I always had myself covered enough so that I didn't have to worry about taking a loss. That can't be said for a lot of guys guiding or handling dogs.
My regulars always tipped and to be honest, I refused to take tips on several occasions. But I would usually rake in atleast $20 on tips per hunt. It's really the gesture that counts, and any extra money is nice. Guys that could give extra did and guys that couldn't always gave a little more next time.

I have hunted a few hunting preserves . I have hunted rock hollow in Freeport Illinois , dawn to dusk hunt club in valpo IN., summit hunt club in Akron IN. , sandy prairie hunt club in Winamac Indiana . I do hunt wild birds in Illinois at the 2 family farms , but the last few years there have only been 1 pheasant on each farm .

giving gratuity for me depends on a few things , 1. how was the guides attitude , 2. did the guide go out of his way to get you your birds , 3. how well did the dogs perform . 4. how many birds did you buy . I give the guide any where between $ 50.00 to $100.00 depending on those for factors , plus i buy dog treats for the guides dog or dogs , the one guide i had really appreciated that and so did the dogs . plus i bring snacks and something to drink for all of us during a break .
