A co worker told me a funny story.
Her husband and his partner were working in a wooded area near Terre Haute yesterday. They were checking a drain. As they lifted the man hole cover they noticed a Tom running toward them. The turkey tried to flog them several times with it's spurs. It only stopped when they left the area.
One of the men thought about hitting the bird with the cover , but did not.
Anyone ever get attacked by a turkey? Someone said it could have been a tame turkey.

5 or 6 years ago, I was driving down a road and saw 4 or 5 jakes along the road side. I pulled up next to them and they just stood there looking at me, so I watched them from maybe 10 feet away. Then they started walking at my truck, so I put it in drive and started moving slow. They disappeared behind my truck and all the sudden I start hearing "tap, tap, tap, tap, ..." I'm looking in my side mirror and I see this turkey pecking at my chrome bumper. So I started to speed up a little faster, then faster, then faster. Here come all 5 turkeys chasing my truck down the road. All I could figure out is that they must have seen their reflections in the chrome bumper and went into fighting mode. I laughed and laughed at them. I drove for probably 1/2 of a mile just fast enough that they could keep up. Funniest thing I've ever seen turkeys do.

There was an article in the local paper here a couple of years ago about a civil deputy who was attacked by a turkey serving court papers to someone. I don't know if they knew whether it was tame or wild though...

I have had little luck with turkey. Actually, it hasn't been little luck, just poor luck actually. My brother, on the other hand, has had great success and has witnessed turkeys attacking fallen turkeys on several occasions. He has shot toms before, and watched as the bird he shot was attacked the second it went down by other toms. Those other toms will absolutely jump on top of another tom that shows any weakness, and flog him till he stops moving, or until he sees the hunter coming. Them birds is just violent. . . lol

I was at a NWTF banquet a couple weeks ago in Battle Creek and they showed a powerpoint video of a turkey attacking a man with a videocam and it was probably the funniest vid iI ahve seen in a while. The tom kept circling the cameraman as he filmed him and would try once in a while to spur him. Finally the turkey walked off down a two-trac and as the cameraman follwed he kept looking back. Awesome video.

One of the lease guys at camp in Florida owns a marina and is a Mercury Outboard dealer. He told me Mercury invited him to come and hunt at their test area they call Lake X which is in Florida. He has a Ford truck with the big chrome bumper and told me he saw a big flock of turkeys while coming in the private drive, so he stopped to watch them. He said they did the same thing DEC said, pecked this bumper and chased him down the road. They evidently see their reflection and attack. Would be a funny site to see. h.h.
