which wildcat caliber?
Im fairly certain I read where Bryan from BFG had said that it was not recommended to chamber the 358BFG (WSSM) in a handi rifle. Gun wasnt strong enough.

Looking for info on rebarreling or reboring a Handi to a wildcat round for some long range Indiana whitetail hunting. Frames aren't strong enough. WSSM cases are made to withstand 64.5k psi too much for a Handi Rifle. Would it work..? probably but would it be safe..? probably not. Handi Rifles do make a nice 357 Maximum gun, though not as powerful as the .358 guns they will kill nicely out to 200 yards and you can buy factory ammo for them. Buy a .357 mag Handi rifle, rent a ream off the net for around $40 and ream the barrel yourself. Easy to do. Ive done 4 of them for people and takes about 10 minutes to ream. h.h.

Have looked at the max as well as the .445Super? Was hoping I could get into something a bit hotter

Mine (Handi in .358 WSSM) works great, but I am only running 2222 fps with a 200 grain bullet instead of the 2500 to 2600 that a stronger action could handle. With Hornady FTX 200 grain it is right at 1000 FT/LBS energy @ 300 yards. Sighted dead on @ 100 yards yields 27 inches low @ 300 yards (third mildot below dead center on my scope). Shoots 0.5 inch groups with current load @ 100 yards.

Omegahunter,
The ballistics you posted are basically what a .357 Maxi does using 180 bullets and less costly for brass. Im curious who did you get to chamber that barrel? Most places wont chamber for a Handi action because of strength issue. h.h.

One more thing using Handi Rifles, hard recoiling calibers in these guns can pop open when fired if the locking lug isn't seated properly on the barrel lug. Ive repaired a couple smokeless powder muzzle loaders using Handi-Rifle frames that would pop open at the shot. After I mated the locking lug to the barrel lug they worked fine. h.h.

Yea, i had a 06 in a Handi that would do that filed the latch and lug a bit and it was fine, the kickin bit##. Shouldn't be a problem with the max should it?

Kodiak50, You shouldn't have a problem with the Handi popping open with a Max and if it does you already know how to fix it. h.h.

Handi Rifles do make a nice 357 Maximum gun.... and you can buy factory ammo for them. One caveat to that- new stock "factory" ammo is available, but from specialty loaders such as Reeds. Any Remington or Federal factory ammo you might find (seem to find it at gun shows) will likely be way overpriced and is old stock. Once you get a max, if you decide to hang onto it, it won't take you long to realize you probably need to start rolling your own.

Here's a great site for the 357 max. 357maximum.com/The tested AA1680 load info is worth taking a look at.

Looking for info on rebarreling or reboring a Handi to a wildcat round for some long range Indiana whitetail hunting. It would be better if you would just buy a .44 Magnum PCR for your Deer Hunting in Indiana. No one can tell but the state of Indiana might not allow wildcat loads for legal hunting cartridges next year. On the .357 Max. I believe this is a "dead" number & ammo would be hard and expensive to find.

Got a trade going for a new .357 barrel, question is am I really going to gain anything going from .44 mag to .357Max??? Looking to extend my optimum kill range. Is there anyone on here that can do the ream job? I can rent one via Graybeard but there is quite a wait.

How to ream a H&R .357 mag to 357 Max, take the barrel and clamp the breech end in a vice with wood blocks with the muzzle point down, use a black magic marker and color the cartridge rim space or head space in the chamber. Use a large tap T-handle to turn the reamer and plenty of heavy cutting oil on the reamer. Turn the reamer in with slight pressure keeping the reamer as straight as possible. I usually let the reamer just cut on its own without pushing in on it. Pull the reamer out every 2 turns and clean off the metal chips. Continue this until the reamer just touches the magic marker color on the head space. Even if the reamer touches a little stop. You now have a .357 Max. Clean out any chips and oil and your ready to shoot. h.h.
