DNR panel approves fenced hunts for coyotes, foxesINDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Hunters in Indiana would be able to use live coyotes and foxes as bait to train hounds in fenced-in enclosures under a rule that has received preliminary approval from state conservation officials. The Indianapolis Star reports that the Indiana Natural Resources Commission voted 9-2 Tuesday to create a permit that allows and regulates such enclosed hunts despite opposition from several animal rights groups. Public hearings must be held before the rule is finally adopted. Critics fear dogs will be allowed to slaughter the animals, which have no way to escape the enclosures. Florida wildlife officials earlier this year moved to ban enclosed hunts. The Star says one such enclosure already exists in southern Indiana. The preliminary vote also included a moratorium on any new enclosure permits after Jan. 1, 2012. (Copyright 2010 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.)

Wasn't that for enclosed training facilities? I watched two different local channels news coverage on this and both said training enclosures and nothing was said about hunting enclosures.
Of course the AP got the story from the Indy Star...........

This is a very very controversial subject. I really can't support killing anything behind a fence unless it is a 1000 acres or more.

Free chase to me means no fences that the game can not get around or over. Anything other than that is just a lazy way of taking an animal.

These are training facilities that operate as a business. They buy the coyotes that they use to train with. Every dog is vet immunized and treated to full health before being introduced into the facility. The videos that were shown were not here, but no one can deny their authenticity. Hopefully they were old enough that those facilities have been reformed or closed. Just like in any aspect of life, the actions of one or two do not completely represent they actions of all who partake in that endeavor.

The original language for closing fenced deer hunting said that it applied to any animal inclosed by a fence even if it was a single strand. Think of what that would have done to your hunting. Be very careful what you support until you do the research. The DNR KILLED the coyote market a few years ago and since no one traps the damn things just for fun they need a market and the running pens may be the answer. And Gundude, there is no such thing as fair chase unless you run it down and kill it with your bare hands. How much chase is involved in perching in a tree and waiting for a deer? How fair is a rifle shot at an animal that has no idea you are across the field? Fair chase is a term that was invented to justify why some hunters came home with empty bags. It's just used to run down how the other guy hunts.

From what I understand the place this happens is in my back yard. Been there for 20+ years. It is inclosed and has a bunch of Acres fenced in. The yotes do have a place to escape the dogs but I don't know how that is that a yote can go somewhere the dogs can't. But whatever. And they are not killing the yotes just chasing them. Now I'm sure some of the dogs if they get a hold of a yote will try to kill the animal but who know's if that happens.... Not saying I'm for it or against it. but just explaining some things about it. BB
