Took the boy out on Sunday, he missed Opening Day because of his JR. MROTC event, and he did see a doe late afternoon. She was coming down the ridge line and instead of turning towards my son she veered away.
But the great part was this: early in the morning as the Sun is coming up (everyone knows how beautiful this is), my son says over the radio: "Dad, even in this messed up world, where we mess up so many things, God sure does make Beautiful things."

Cool story TagTeamHunter, you must be raising him right, stories like this kind of cancels out some of the negative stuff we all too often here about our youth. Pat yourself on the back!

I didn't get to hunt the opener - my son was running in the State Finals for Cross Country (came in the top 20, but not his personal best...but 'Dad' was EXTREMELY proud!!) - but got out dark & early Sunday! Day started off slow...then some 'sportsman' unloads SEVEN times (I am pretty sure they reloaded after 5!) about 8:05AM fairly close...liked to scared the crap out of me - was just getting to that 'REM' stage. ;D A few other random & further away shots but pretty quiet for Day #2. Saw a total of 6 deer - 2 little bucks (a 7pt. & a HUGE 4pt.!) & then 4 does. The fourth doe through it was NOT her lucky day because I was really tired of watching them walk by with no bucks in tow! She wasn't real useful bringing the boys in, but she sure with make some great sausage!!!

Saturday was for the most part uneventful with the usual lovely sound of freedom booming in the distance, caught a glimpse of one deer. Sunday morning about 7:30 had a doe come in and bed down about 60 yards away in the thick stuff, about 15 minutes later a big tall wide 140ish inch 9 point came in a got her off the bed and chased her away in the other direction. Had a shot but was rather thick and being only the second day of the season I decided to pass on him.

Got done yesterday PM. Took one for the team, removed a 5 1/2 year old 8 out of the breeding pool. Big deer, 200 on the scale and about 135 on the horns with part of the main beam broke off. Can't afford a ME Doe tag, so I'm hunting IL. from here on out.

BTW - HERE was a disturbing find this weekend! Found in Southern Indiana - Crawford Co. (near Harrison Co.). While I would love to hunt 'em...that is one critter I wouldn't mind going to hunt somewhere ELSE!!!

^ thats a wild hog i would say? Not sure about "wild", but at least feral I would presume. I have seen some 'strange' deer tracks in the area...but after finding this, I understand why they were strange! Hopefully just an escapee...but I fear it is only a matter of time.

So Sunday morning starts off pretty good... at 6:35 a..m I have a doe and two yearling's come in at about 60 yards. I watch them mill around moving through to the east at a leisurely pace. At about 6:45 a small buck comes in from the same direction and he's grunting with every other step he takes. Funny thing is he goes right by the doe and yearling's like they don't even exist and makes his way up the ridge to the east. Not ten minutes later this 7 pt. comes straight in on me. I recognize him as a deer I had several trail cam pics of back in the first part of Oct. At first I don't think I'm going to shoot him and let him walk right underneath me and out the back side. Well as he passes me I get a good look at him and decide I'd try and take him. I turn around and let a Lightfield fly at 15 yards. I hit him good and he ran about 40 yards and crashed. I get down, field dress him and after I get done and start dragging him out, I take a break and decide to take a pic of him with my phone. Well while I'm doing this another buck came in on the path I was dragging him out on and and started blowing. He was only about twenty yards when he let out the first snort, I had my head down glued to my phone and I haf'ta say it scared the living daylights outta me! Well 45 minutes later I got him out with no more surprises. He dressed out at 160# and made a good exclamation point to a great season!
