Maybe I am just totally off base here but I got to ask...for the second year in a row I am set up in my tree stand way ahead of shooting light...in fact when I parked there was not another vehicle in site and I had high hopes to renew my string of deer on opening morning from the same tree in Morgan Monroe...it got broken last year and here is my complaint...I know its public ground...I know people are lovin that warm weather so the woods are packed with people who are what I call "Fair weather hunters"...but does anyone just look around as they are heading to their spots...I had 4 different guys come almost dead straight to my stand location picking through the dark with their flash lights...I blinked my flash light at them all and a couple got the message that someone was already set up there...but a couple others just kept on coming and one set up not 40 yards from the base of my tree...all were ground hunters and I am perched 35 foot up my tree overlooking a ravine with feeder fingers...and then right in prime time they both get up and start walking around...not leaving just looking around their general areas like the deer were hiding under logs or rocks...now I have been hunting deer for 38 years....and one of the lessons my dad taught me was to be aware of other hunters so as not to mess up their set ups...he always said the chances of getting a deer set up right on top of someone else is not very likely...well after they milled around for an hour after sunrise they bugged out and left me to sit until the rain got heavy without a hint of a deer...I don't know what to do...I don't have any vacation days so I am going to be a weekend warrior...I don't have any private ground access...and I am pretty sure the story will be the same where ever I go...I never clicked the safety off last season...and am a little forlorn thinking about the possibility of getting skunked again for only the second time in 15 years...so what does everyone else do?...

That's the problem with opening day anymore. If you don't have your own property you are at the mercy of other's. Normally your fair weather want a be deer hunter's get burnt out real quick. So my quess is after this weekend your spot will probably thin out a bit. Good luck to you.

I hunted MMSF opening day and I had better luck with hunters, not with deer, several came my way while I was setting up and when they saw our headlamps they moved to another location. Opening day can get hectic, don't know why I even go out sometimes. Guess I'll see if Sunday is better. :-)

I got there at 4:10...went about 1/2 mile in myself and put my climber on and up the tree...do you know where the handicapped access road runs there...I can see the trucks driving up it...well it all went to crap between 6:00 and 6:30...never saw a deer although I had someone shoot to my right and less then 150 yards away and saw two guys dragging something out later...I will be back in there same time in the morning and hope that the weather will run some off...thats not nice...I just hope they look around before setting up on top of someone else...I'm to forlorn to go up and down the tree a bunch of times or I would just move

The more popular the sport gets, the less people show etiquette! I've been deer hunting for 24 years (since I was 6) and the the changes in the sport are rediculous! It used to frustrate me beond belief, but I have just come to except that if I am going to continue to deer hunt, I will just have to deal with it! Deer hunting just isn't what it once was. Sad to say, but it is becoming a rich mans sport. If you want private ground, you better be willing to fork out money to lease ground because I guarantee A rich doctor from Georgia will be more than happy to! Anyway, I'm done ranting. Good luck tomorrow. Don't let it get to you. It happens everywhere. (even private ground)

I hunt public ground every year and its the same story every year from me tellin it or hearing it from some one else about hunters setting up nearly spittin distance from another guy, if I head into a spot if there is even one other ar in the area I either try a different spot or I search the trees and ground as I walk in looking to see if I can spot a guy set up already in the distance so that I dont mess him up. But it seems like every year no matter what I have a guy walk in on me just like this morning my dad and I got in before light no others parked in the area, around 9 am here walks aguy with a bow in his hand and heading directly to me I wavedhim off and shook my hat at him (orange) he walked right over to me where I was on the ground and tried to strike up a conversation with me !!!! REALLY I didnt wave to talk I waved so he would leave the area since i had been in there for hours before he decided to walk in !!! Good Luck to you all especially on public ground LOL ! Guess we just got to get private land or get used to it ! ~ INDeerhunter ~

A short post in the opposite direction from me for once, lol
I said before, I'm sharing a woods...........and that is not the norm for most of my life. There was some issues where I was being pushed a bit to get out but a short call to the landowner fixed that.
That said, opening day, I stayed in contact with one of the guys who seemed a bit more conscious of others and while no one shot I found that, at least he, was like me and really hoping for a good day for us both.
He went out of his way to cross the field to shake my hand and wish me good luck and a happy birthday and later that day txt'd me what he had seen and we shared stories.
He IS just a big buck hunter and KNOWS I am bow hunting by preference AND to not spook every deer for them, since I shoot does........and he appreciates it.
The other guy, well, the damage is done and it will probably rear its ugly head again but I for one and glad to add at least another "contact", if not to someday be a friend to my hunting list.
I think he rethought things when I heard him shoot during bow season and when I saw he wasnt at the truck when I went nor coming accross the field after dark....I txt him asking him if he needed help tracking.
Sometimes, not always, a best foot forward can turn a really BAD thing into something at least less annoying.......and possibly result in a life long friendship.
I am thankful opening day went by without a hitch or issue and I got to spend it watching deer and hoping. We will see how today goes.
God Bless Steve

it doesnt just end in the woods either. Opening morning I left my house for my drive North to my property. Im driving the speed limit on a bumpy county road. I see a vehicle turn onto the road behind me. It quickly gains on me to the point of extreme tailgating. Now from riding motorcycles all my adult life one thing I can not stand is a tailgater. so I slow down hoping he would pass, no such luck, so I slow down even more, no such luck...so now Im a little more than irritated so I just stop and move over enough he could pull around me or come up and talk about his driving habits. He chose to floor it and go around me and as I pulled back on to the road behind them the 3 guys wearing bright orange hats just made me shake my head. stupid hunters, they're all a bunch of slobs.......

All I can say is you can blame this all on the television. Nowadays everyone thinks they can hunt because they watch the Outdoor Channel! Look at all the carp people (wanna be hunters) buy. Advertising really worked here. Companies have made a ton of money off of people who are searching for something in life. Hunting is one of there gotta try it, maybe I'll fit in but in the mean time they are ruining a lot of real hunters hunts!

forgot how bad opening morning can be until this one, apparently dry weather means you can drive a truck thru the woods to line sit, happened twice and no orange, also had a deer poached within a 100 yards of me, bad thing is it ruined two hunts for friends of mine that I had invited to hunt, nothing surprises me anymore

I have a question for all of you, How can we "true hunters" (the born and bred ones like myself and most of you all) help stop these "instant orange army" "weekend warriors" from giving the rest of of bad names and ruining everyones hunt every year I think the hunters education programs may help for SOME of the future generations to atleast have some damn respect and ethics but what about the ones that dont have to do the course of every year they go from "couch to stand" opening weekend and then thats it ? What can hunters do to help fix the problem or do you think its even possible I would be more than willing to "help" put better hunters out there every year or talk at a forum or something to help in raising awareness about true ethical hunters and true respect and safety for hunters and game alike ! I cant stand to see the youtube videos that are posted every year too from these "outdoor channel couch hunters" where their buddy put a bad shot on a animal or the complete disrespect the animal kicking it to see if its still alive or walking up on a wounded one and video it struggling to live from a poor shot for the world of anti-hunters to see !!!! WHAT CAN WE DO as ethical law abiding and respectful true blue hunters ? Im sure some if not most of you would be willing to do something to prevent them from continueing to ruin hunts and broadcast selfish disrespectful videos online and stop them from causing accidents both on the roads and in the woods from their stupidity so does anyone have any suggestions ? Just curious what we all could come up with on this, so if you dont mind I would like to hear your opinions ! ~ INDeerhunter ~ And good luck this season and be safe !!!!!
