I picked up a new gun this weekend and need some input on ammo. I plan to hunt deer in Kentucky, so I went with the 100gr soft nose rounds. I did find 85 grain polymer tip rounds. I was wondering about performance on coyote? I currently carry my .17 HMR while running the trap line, because I always seem to run into a dog or two investigating the one that didn't get away.
I'm thinking about taking the .243 with the 85 grain polymer tips for better range and power. Has anyone used these and do they fragment enough to not blow huge holes out the other side?

Can you be a little more specific about bullet manufacturer/type? Varminter bullets typically have a much thinner jacket than target or large game bullets. This allows the bullet to expand or "fragment" on small thin skinned animals. A thick jacketed target or large game bullet will likely not expand on an animal like a coyote and should come out the other side, but with little pelt damage. And I am guessing at 85gr, you have a bullet designed for large game. The polymer tip can have an impact on expansion, but is often used to decrease aerodynamic drag and thereby increasing ballistic coefficient. So, trajectory is flattened.

The ones I saw were winchester supreme ballistic tip, I believe. My Neighbor is using a .243 Savage Model 111 & he is using Winchester Supreme 100 gr. ballistic "Silver Tips".

I've been using a .243 for coyotes for the past 10 years. I've setteled on 85 grain Sierra Gameking BTHP's loaded to 3100 FPS as my coyote load. Maybe one in 10 coyotes I shoot with this load will result in a blowup, or blowout as it may be. The vast majority of the time I get a quarter size exit. I've tried 75 grain ballistic tips from my .243 and have not been impressed with the accuracy of the bullet I tried. I shot a few coyotes using this bullet though and did notice I was getting larger exit wounds, about fist size. I will say that using any varmint type bullet in a .243 on coyotes you are going to get an occasional destroyed pelt. I shot a coyote at 75 yards a couple years ago using the 85 grain Gameking and nearly cut the thing in half. I'd never seen that kind of carnage from my .243. I suppose I just hit it in a way that resulted in a mess. All in all, I find the .243 Winchester to be the ideal cartridge for coyotes.

Hornady makes a 58 grain v-max round for the .243 designed specifically for varmint hunting. Just read a nice article in Predator Extreme magazine on this line of ammo of diff. calibers just for varmints. Have not used it yet, however reviews seem to give it a bump ahead of the competition imo.
