Pretty dry lately. I have only seen a resident bird or two while walking the dog. May try a bit of woodcock hunting tomorrow.

Finally made it out, six days into the season. Saw six birds with one missed shot. An enjoyable hunt.

We saw a couple woodcock buzz our dekes up in Steuben County Saturday morning. The area around the pothole we were hunting was incredibly dry, one nearby pothole we had jumped ducks off of in past years was bone dry. My lab did kick up one very fat hen pheasant, a good sign I thought. We heard a couple or roosters crowing too. I thought about trying some woodcock hunting in the area but things are so dry up here I thought it would be a waste of time. One more thing: Do you eat those birds? I mean, their diet is mostly eathworms, not exactly the makings of some good eatin', you know? How do they taste? Do you use lots of Open Pit on them or what?

I didn't know anybody around here hunted timberdoodles anymore. I used to consider them a target of opportunity when I hunted grouse...... back when there was a huntable population of grouse.

I've had no success here in Indiana, but a few weeks ago we had a blast in northern Michigan. It is some of the toughest yet finest shooting I've done. I found out it is more about dog work and enjoying the woods than bagging game. We ended up grilling out some grouse and woodcock and I will say the breast of a woodcock is pobably the deepest red of any of the birds. Reminded me of the liver of a gutted deer. Best you can do is marinate well and just enjoy the game for what it is. I posted this on a different thread but just for kicks, here is Duke my German Wirehaired with his little "prize":

I've been meaning to ask how your trip to MI went. Woodcock are kinda like ducks... terrible if overcooked.
Was thinking of going this morning, but the storms coming through took care of that. Sophie the vizsla is four years old today. We will get out this week and I should start getting pictures again as my new walk-around camera arrives today.
Bring on November 5th!
