Very nice catch! I don't believe I would have done what you did though. Thanks for sharing!

Nice pic! You've got bigger cajones than I do. No way would I get that close on purpose. I've had those bald faced hornets building nests on my place for the past 5-6 years. I've always waited until cold weather sets in and gone to get one to keep, but something keeps beating me to it, tearing the nest open and ruining it. I finally found the culprit this year. I had a nest built about 7' from the back porch door. We came to an agreement. They wouldn't bother me, and I'd leave them alone. It worked out very well. But, about 2-3 weeks ago I saw a chickadee picking away at the nest, and the next day a pair of tufted titmice were doing the same thing. Now the outside is completely shredded exposing the cells inside, which they were getting into and eating the larvae. I was cutting the grass this year and when I went past the arborvitae, I looked over my left shoulder and saw exactly what that picture shows. We were eyeball to eyeball at about 18". I got the hell out of there ASAP!!!!! I did almost the same thing with one that was in an Ash tree last year. After hitting the branch that held the nest 2x with the ROPS on the tractor, I happened to glance up right before the 3rd pass. I couldn't find reverse quick enough. Luckily, both times I didn't get nailed. I did get that one out of the Arborvitae before it got damaged. ;D
