this is always an interesting topic, but what does everyone prefer for their handgun to be chambered in? (doesnt have to be those calibers, can be any!!) thanks in advance!

I'll stick with a straight walled case for reloading but other than that choose your bullet wisely and there isn't all that much in it. You could give me a 9, 40, or 45 that is reliable and I shoot well & I couldn't care less which of those 3 it's chambered in. I do want my primary gun to be nothing smaller than 38Spec/9mm; after that I don't get very excited. Now the 41mag doesn't have much in the way of ammo selection and the 44mag is pretty tough to shoot well and quickly in small guns so they don't interest me for a SD package.

I just bought an XD sub-compact and opted for the 9mm. I like the idea of 13 rounds in a fairly small gun. I usually carry a j-frame S&W in .38 sp.
As far as range shooting I really like my 4" S&W 686 .357 mag. A bit large for concealed carry though.

Get all 4!
All joking aside, all are great rounds in their own right. I say try them all if you can, and figure out what fits you best.

The only self defense pistols I have right now are in .45acp and .380. I like the .45acp and the 9mm, in that order, because of ammo availability everywhere. I enjoy the 40, but prefer the 10mm over all mentioned calibers, which is a 40 with a slightly longer case and more power. I once had one and will likely buy another someday in a 1911 platform. Bullet placement is the key and all will do the job though....

I would have to answer that it depends on the intended purpose of the gun. If it's for self defense, I carry one of three different calibers depending on where I'm going, the weather conditions, and how deep I need to conceal.

For me I mainly target shoot with mine, or carry (not necessarily concealed.. where allowed)

I like my S&W 40 with 14 round clips. But usually carry a little .22 in my pocket because its not noticable.
