The wife has been hinting here and there about going hunting with me the last couple of years, so I'm thinking about getting her one of the legal rifles to hunt with. What does everyone prefer? She's fairly petite and I don't want the recoil to kill her. Thanks in advance..

Without a doubt a H&R .357 mag and have it reamed out to .357 Remington Maximum. You can get it reamed for less than $30.00 or do it yourself. She can shoot .357 mag or Max in it. Recoil is almost nothing with the Mag. The 357 Mag is good to 75-80 yards and the Max will shoot 200 yards. If the guns too long you can get a youth stock. h.h.

I would agree. The H&R rifles in .357 mag or .44 mag are great guns for the money.
I've reamed my .357 to max but haven't gotten to shoot it beyond 50 yards.

Funny timing. I'm about to do a trade with SingleShooter for a 'Tender to put back for my grandson when he is of age - the barrel I have in mind - a carbine 357Max.

My 10 year shoots the 44mag and loves it. There isn't much recoil either. He is a little guy for 10 years old too. Well actually he will be 11 on thursday. 357 or 44 mag you cant go wrong with either.

.44 mag. should not beat her up with recoil.

I'd opt for the 44, simply because ammo is readily available and they do a number on deer. If you're a handloader that 357 Max option is interesting.

Been tossing around this very topic myself ...... the wife says she might want to go with me every once in a while so I need something that isnt going to kick the snot out of her.
Question .... The 357 maximum seems to be a good option but will the accuracy deteriorate if a guy decides to shoot 357magnum rounds out of it?
I would put together an encore if I did this.

I'd probably go with the 44, because the ammo is usually easier to get around here (although that's admittedly a minor thing) The recoil isn't bad, and though I haven't used it, my hunting buddies have and the performance is certainly adequate.

My Handi lost a little accuracy with mag rounds after reaming to max, but still has deer hunting accuracy. I wouldn't hesitate using it with mag ammo at 75-80 yards.
Of course, if you reload the 44 mag can be loaded down.

Is it possible to shoot 38 special loads from a maximum ..... and if the answer to that question is yes I would assume a person could expect accuracy to fall off even more?

Yes you can shoot 38 Special in a Max but it isnt legal for hunting. Max loads are very comfortable to shoot. 357 Mag loads are good to 60-70 yards and easy on the shoulder. You can expect 2-3" groups with the Mag in a Max chamber and if you hand load better. If you go with the Max I can give you a load that shoots great in the 4 Handi Rifles I shot it in. 1-2" groups at 100 yards using 180 grain Hornady SSP bullet. h.h.

I was just thinking of the 38 special loads for my wife to plink around with .... get familiar with the gun.
Best place to get an encore barrel in maximum?
HH .... I have been tossing around the idea of setting up another bolt gun in 358BFG for my dad but I have never done it before. You interested in fitting a barrel onto a savage action?

I can do it but you cant ship the action to me cause I don't have an FFL. I use a sized case to set the head space so its best to use one out of your dies. Let me know if you decide to do it. h.h.

Will do. I would say I am leaning that way ..... if I come across a suitable donor gun I know I will go through with it.

My grandsons .357 mag with 158 grain softpoint ammo has taken two deer. One at 58 yards and one at 40 yards. Both pass throughs and both short blood trails. His rifle will shoot 38s, 357 mag and 357 maximum with good accuracy. His first deer was taken last year when he was 8. We don't use hollow points just softpoints.

I once made the statement that I will never again hunt deer with a slug gun since I started using my muzzle loaders during the firearms season. My wife got me an H&R 44 mag last Christmas and now I'm saying I will never lug around my heavy muzzle loaders again during the firearms season. I love the light weight of the Handi. I'm very confident out to 150 yards with it and did I mention how light it is to pack. Even though I very seldom had any misfires with my muzzle loaders, I know for certain I won't with my Handi, and it's light to pack. Your wife will love you even more if you get her one, I love mine more since she bought me mine last Christmas.
