Applications available for Canada goose reductions at several state parks Hunters interested in helping the DNR control the population of Canada geese at various DNR properties on selected dates in November and December can register now for a draw for spots to participate in reductions. To be eligible, prospective hunters must register for the reserved hunts by completing an online application until Oct. 10 at www.IndianaOutdoor.IN.gov Individuals can apply for any park or set of dates listed below, as long as dates do not coincide. Applicants and standby participants must be Indiana residents and 18 years of age by Nov. 8, and should have their hunting license number ready to enter in the application. Hunters must present a state waterfowl stamp, HIP number, and federal duck stamp on site on the day of the reduction, but do not need them to apply. Apprentice licenses are not applicable. Though Canada geese are the only harvest permitted, all state and federal laws pertaining to waterfowl hunting apply. Successfully drawn hunters can participate in multiple two-day reduction hunts at Potato Creek, Chain O’Lakes, Shakamak, and Lincoln state parks or single, one-day reductions at Ouabache and Whitewater Memorial state parks. The dates, as listed below, coincide with hunting seasons to optimize effectiveness. Other factors considered in determining dates included state and federal law, local flight patterns of geese and goose behavior. Park Dates Access Potato Creek Nov. 8/9 & 22/23 Restricted Ouabache Nov. 29, Dec. 6, 13, 17 Closed Chain O'Lakes Nov. 18/19 & Dec. 1/2 Closed Whitewater Memorial Nov. 24, 27, Dec. 1, 4, 8, 15 Restricted Shakamak Dec.11/12,18/19,Jan.8/9,Feb. 5/6,12/13 Closed Lincoln Jan. 10/11 & 24/25 Closed

All well and Good ... but what's the Bag Limit ? Fed. Limit that time of season is 2 a day ... I hardly seeing that making a dent and can't see too many people signing up to kill 2 geese a day without being able to get their 6 duck limit too . Shoot in some instances you can be limited out before the frost burns off . Throw in the 6 duck limit and woohoo ... up the daily limit to 5 birds like the September & Feburary season and woohoo ..... 2 birds a day .... well the State is on the right track opening up the Parks ... but spittin in the wind gettin true results ... IMHO

As a hunter this is so much better then letting some employee go around in the spring with a gallon of cooking oil and flags or the ol' gather and gas method. agreed the effeciency is probably not even 1% but this isn't some golf course with high paying members stepping on green cheetos or getting chased, it's hikers and bird watchers, fishermen boaters, and campers at these places. They should allow and encourage all hunting methods.
Lots of room for improvement and they have been improving the set up each and every year they have had it. If you don't want to get up and drive to a park for 2 geese, that is fine don't apply. I bet there will still be plenty of guys that do.

i work at Lincoln Park so maybe i can give some insight. we usually have around 30-40 resident geese in the spring and they CRAP on our swimming beach every day !!! in late spring we usually herd them into the beach house bathrooms and catch them and haul them to Sugar Ridge to be released. this year we did'nt get them all. recently we had over 150 show up and it was a daily chore picking up goose poop and washing the walkway off ! the rest of it was mixed into the sand with our beach drag ;D they were in no way allowed to be harmed by the employees ! harassed maybe a little the manager asked for a reduction hunt and got approval ,but i think it will come too late to do much good here. the large bunch has disappeared for now. soooo, you may show up and not see anything, i dunno. hope this helps some of you decide wether or not to apply. i don't know the limit but i can find out tomorrow. glad to help if you have any questions !

Oh I'll sign up ... and if drawn I'll scout out a close by duck huntin spot ... then flip a coin which one I go to or possibly go to both spots ....
Wasn't tryin to fire anyone up ... just pointin out that it's a weak attempt by the State when they could open them up in Sept. or Feb. and get better results ...

Sept is to busy of a month for campers and such to close the park. Then Feb could be froze or not in the designated counties

The beaches are officially closed at Hardy Lake and Starve Hollow the day after Labor Day .. that means free game for goose hunters in Sept . Designated Counties ? If they can make a special exception to hunt a State Park don't you think they can make the special exception on the location being outside the designation ?
Basic concept ... get signed up ... get in there and kill 'em all ... good luck to everyone and enjoy it while you can .. Let's hope it continues and the State wakes up and takes better advantage of the situation .

I can tell you from experience that these reductions are pretty much i waste of time. in the two years ive been at summit no one has showed up. You sit in your spot and the birds just go fly off somewhere else. I think last year maybe 7 of 25 showed up.
