I finally got this slate call done , the pot is sassafras with 3.5"x1/8" thick Pennsylvania slate over a 3"x1/8" thick glass . I did the side turnings myself . It sounds pretty sweet too .

Looks great Kevin! Nice work....just a few weeks too late to try her out on a boss gobbler!!! Don't you mean a few months early ? Gotta think positive . I'm considering the purchase of a small lathe to make myself a couple more out of woods like walnut and zebrawood , along with some custom one piece strikers . If they turn out well maybe I can make a few bucks selling some on Ebay . It's as good an excuse to buy power tools as I can think of , and I doubt that Gobblestopper will lose much sleep over me ... ;D

Kevin I've been playing around and making some call for the last couple years. Here's a few. I bought a Delta Midi-lathe and love it. The 3.5 inch calls sound better than the 3 inch calls though. Ridgerunner

Looks great Kevin & Ridgerunner!!
Kevin, a lathe is a good investment. You can make all kinds of neat stuff, not just huntin' things. The Delta Midi and the Jet are both good lathes that are reasonable priced and don't take up the whole shop. Good tools are a must though. More expensive at first, but in the long run it is amazing how much time they will save you by staying sharp longer. A chuck or mandrel is also something nice to have. Then you can turn some crow calls, duck calls, owl hooters, goose calls......the list goes on and on.
If you decide to try some glass calls let me know. I get my glass from about the cheapest guy around and the edges are smooth as can be. There is also a place up in Penn. called Penn Big Bed Slate that has slate for about as cheap as you can find it. Great people and a very consistent surface.

Many thanks Gobblestopper ! This is just a hobby for me , but my experience with my half assed set up intrigued me enough to consider furthering it with better tools . The gouges I used were bought on the cheap , and I can definitely tell that they won't do for future projects . Don't lose sleep though , I doubt that I'll be cutting into your action anytime soon .
