All I've done is jump shot ducks, and pass shot geese. My buddy who has some property that he can hunt on (and decoy) said that I need to come out hunting with him. He said that I should buy a duck and goose call and start practicing.
So, what are some recommendations that won't break the bank?

I like Quackhead Brand. They're only around $20 apiece so they won't break the bank and they sound great. I think the double reed duck call is the way to go for a beginner. The Goozilla will take some practice but it will sound great once you get the hang of it. Good Luck

Not cheap. But good stuff that you can learn and grow on.

DR-85 (haydels double reed duck call) SMH is easy but so are Winglock wood calls about 1/2 the price last I checked. I have one of each and both are great. If going for flute call Lone River Honker or about any of the flutes are easy and good.

It just depends on how much you want to spend. Then choose what type call you want, acrylic, delrin, wood. All types make great sounds, and will give you years of good use. Also, on a goose call, have you ever blown one? Some guys like to start with a double reed duck call, some say single reed duck call. A lot of it starts by how much you want to spend. Some of the mass produced calls, sound pretty good for a beginner. I personally, have been hunting for 30 years starting this Fall, and I make my own calls, but if your just starting out, you can go to buy you a cheaper call that sounds decent to try, I would say you should be able to buy a starter call for around 20-30 dollars for a duck call, and from 30 -60 for a ok goose call if your looking at trying not to break the bank. I see a lot of guys jump feet first and buy th e most expensive call on the market because it won a worlds title, but the biggest thing as a callmaker to tell you is, those guys practice at least 1-2 hours daily, 7 days a week, year round, so do not think just because this call won the worlds duck or goose championship, that this is the call, it takes a lot of practice, and a lot of time. start small and work your way up if you want to. Waterfowl hunting is very addictive and very expensive, so have funand do some homework.

Thanks guys. Nope, I've never blown a duck or a goose call. I can call crows pretty good, and have dabbled with varmints but this is the first foray into waterfowl decoying/calling.

Thanks. 3 of us went out on Saturday, we got 5 woodies and 2 mallards. I need to find a choke for my gun, it's patterning way too tight for the type of shooting we were doing. The group of mallards that came in I could have swatted them with my gun barrel if I had stood up.
I'm calling some choke tube companies today. It's an odball barrel - it shoots 12 ga shells, but the bore is a .025 overbored 10 ga barrel (0.800" I.D.) , with what I think is a 10 ga Invector Plus choke tube system. I have two choke tubes for it, a .060" and a .090" constriction. It's a Stan Baker Big Bore Barrel.
Two mallards gave us the evil eye from about 80 yds away on Sunday and didn't like something, so they left.

:'(Two pieces of advice: One, find a call you like that you can call easily with it and then stick with it. Don't be buying a bunch of different calls and think you will sound like a duck callin' champ with one or another. You will sound like a duck with a hernia till you learn how to call. Second, get one of those duck calling instructional tapes and keep it in your car or truck with you. Practice on your way to from work every day, ignore those people in other cars staring at you. Play the tape over and over and try to sound like those guys on the tape. It takes time, but you will get the hang of it if you keep with it. Do NOT attempt to practice with wife or kids in car, the roars of laughter will drown out your calling. It's kind of like playing a musical instrument, it will not happen over night. Kenny G you ain't - till you practice. Finally, don't loan out your duck and goose calling tapes, you may not get them back. I am still trying to figure out who has my classic Bill Lohman goose calling tape, I was just gettting to the point where I could make that double cluck sound too .... Good huntin' to ya!
