Hello All,
I'm 26 and just started hunting about 13 months ago (I'm hooked). Anyway, I've been borrowing a .22 and need to get one of my own. Any suggetions for a good starter.

Do you have an action preference? The Ruger 10/22 is very popular especially as you can modify it about any way you can think of. The trigger isn't as good as I would like but that can be modified as well. CZ makes a nice little bolt gun. Savage has 22's with their AccuTrigger. All my experience has been with the centerfires but I like the AccuTrigger, it's easy to adjust and can be made pretty good for a factory trigger. It would be worh taking a look at them as well.

Don't forget marlin. I would go to the gunshop and handle as many as I could and see how they fit and feel. Pick the one that you like best. Get several different boxes of ammo and shoot 4 or 5 groups with the rifle and see what it shoots best. If you scope it make sure you use a 1 inch scope. If a bolt gun, make sure the bolt clears the bell on the scope when cycled.

All good advise. Most modern 22s made by major manufacturers are pretty good guns. Action type will likely be the big choice that you need to make.
Handle a few and see what feels good to ya.

I have the Marlin pumps thru the Marlin model 60. Been great success with the Ruger 10/22. Like most here, I've had great fun with many .22s. This year, I got my Henry lever action from charlie here at hunt-indiana and I don't think I've ever enjoyed a .22 as much as this one.
Still haven't popped a squirrel with it yet but that's not the gun's fault!!! We'll put a few down soon as I've got my "resting stick" ready to go thanks to hornharvesters suggestion.

I've got Henry .22 lever action - great gun and inexpensive (for new) my brother has a Ruger 10-22 (semi-auto) that he bought used at a garage sale - great gun and inexpensive (hard to beat garage sales) my Dad has a Marlin .22 lever action that I grew up shooting - great gun, but I'm sure would be a little more $$ nowadays
If you can, try to find a used rifle (any of the above manufacturers) and have fun plinking!

There are several good models on the market. It depends on what you wish to spend. You can get a first rate bolt action anywhere from $200 to $2,000. I own a CZ M-452 AMERICAN CLASSIC in .22 LR also a Marlin Model 60, which is a good choice for a beginner.

If money is an issue, I'd go with a Marlin bolt gun. The one I have is a tack driver! I would stay away from the Glenfield semi-autos, but their bolt guns are good. Ruger makes nice .22's, my current weapon of choice is a Stainless Ruger International model 10/22. I put an after marget trigger kit in, and the trigger is now tolerable.

I love my Browning T-bolt. The new ones look great and they changed the bolt a little. Mine shoots great. I agree with the used market. I like the Ruger, but detest the mags, I have never got used to them.

The magazines for the Rugers is one thing I love about them! lol I love that they sit flush with the stock.

I agree - with a little drop in kit to help the trigger the 10/22 is a pretty nice little auto for the $$$ involved. My go to 22lr is a 541T. However the current Remington bolt 22's just don't do much for me. I think if I was buying a new 22 bolt I's take a good look at the CZ.

if price is an issue, and you want a semi auto .22 rifle, then i would suggest the savage arms 64f series. around 150 bux, and its a simple composite stock rifle, i think it has a 10 round mag, lever safety, and iron sites. fun rifle to shoot though. if you are wanting something nicer, then remington has nice ones. just look around. good luck! (the best 22. rf semiauto pistol ive found is by sig sauer, their mosquito modeled after the p226. my wifes getting one in pink for christmas)
