My nephew asked me last Sun if I'd take him turkey hunting this week, he has a very busy schedule between golf school and all the other activities a15 year old can get into. I told him sure but it was the last week of the season and I couldn't guarantee anything. He said no problem he just wanted to get out there, at this point I knew that it didn't matter what happened the hunt would be a success as long as no one got hurt (other than a turkey!) We decided on Sun, I begged his mom (my sister) to let us go she finally said yes but I had to have him home by supper, no problem. Sunday came and we were a little late getting to the woods, I really wasn’t planning on setting up before light, just the old run and gun anyway so getting out of the truck at dawn didn't hurt much anyway. We started our hunt and began walking down an old road bed and heard gobble well I figured let's go! As we neared a good setup point I thought I heard putting like we had bumped a hen I couldn’t see anything running away or flying away so I thought it might be another hunter I looked at my nephew and said we gotta go back, he didn’t understand, when we got back to the trail I explained that while hunting public property you have to keep in mind that other people are hunting the same land and if that was another hunter he would have been very happy to see us leave quietly and not spook his bird. He seemed to understand but was a bit disappointed that maybe we wouldn't be able to get on another bird. I didn't say anything but I knew the chances could be slim. We walked a good mile and had to stop to tie a shoe and a sip of water. I hadn't called for a while so I tried some soft yelps. we heard a gobble that seemed like it was a mile off (exaggerated distance) I thought this might be our only shot, so I said we've got a long way to go before we get to him but if he's gobbling now he's lonely. so we went after this tom and of course he shuts up, we heard other gobblers but again all of them seemed so far off I just tried to get my bearings straight and follow the sound, we walked a couple of hundred yards toward the last bird I heard and called, we got a response! It was a double gobble I told my nephew this was a good sign. We worked our way toward the gobbles and found a good area to sit. I knew where this bird was I had seen a lot of sign in the holler (valley) below last week. I gave my nephew my vest; it had the nice seat on it! I sat next to him, he had his gun semi-ready, kind of half in his lap but not much movement would make him ready. I told him that if he saw one not to let it get too close we didn’t have a lot of cover. I clucked a couple of times and got a gobble I just made soft calls and clucks. I hadn't heard anything for a while and then I see my nephew point his gun in the direction of the gobbles. I asked "do you see something?” He nodded. I looked over and there, strutting up the hill is a tom with a hen in tow, the bird went behind a tree and my nephew changed positions, I whispered "as soon as you have a shot take it" KABOOM! I watched the bird do a back flip and yelled "you got it!" Man was he happy, I was pretty happy too! After the bird expired I showed my nephew the spurs and beard and a few other traits about turkeys that are interesting. I took the gun and helped him get the bird on his shoulder, we had at least a mile and a half walk back to the truck and we had a smile on the whole way!
The bird weighed in at 19 lbs with a 10 1/4" beard and 21mm spurs. This by far was my favorite hunt this year, his first bird and I was there for it. Thanks for reading such a long story I just felt compelled to share it with a bunch of guys I knew would appreciate it.
