I was shooting my 7mm-08 Encore pistol yesterday and I was extremely pleased with my shooting at 50 yards. I don't have a bench rest so a chair and shooting sticks comprises my "range setup." I was shooting approximately 1" at 50 yards and I am certain that I could do better off of a bench, but I don't have that option at this time. I am using a 2-6x Bushnell Trophy scope and running some mild handloads through the tube. I am using 140gr Nosler Ballistic Tips over 41gr of Varget and the recoil is minimal. This is a rifle caliber that I would recommend to the handgunner for all of the reasons that I have mentioned. I need to get some additional loads worked up because the season will be here before we know it. I also want to put in some time at longer range to see how it will shoot.

Not bad at all. I wouldn't worry about the bench; you are shooting at darn near field conditions the way you are doing it now - 100 yds and beyond should be no problem. Those specialty pistols will flat shoot. I really like Varget, it has given me excellent results in several calibers. I'd say the deer are in trouble!

That'll work! Keep us up to speed how you do out there a bit but bet it will impress you.
That combo of SP and round has a great rep and we're looking forward to some deer photos from you too!
Hunting with an SP this year too (if it ever gets here lol)
God Bless Steve

Steve, What caliber are you waiting for? I also have a pro hunter barrel in .243 win and a regular stainless tube in .204 Ruger. Good stuff... ;D

Got one on order (paid for...grumble grumble).
A MOA Maximum in 6.5x284. "Sometime in September " is the new ETA.
<<<<---------- Gonna look like that for the most part.
The 7mm-08 you are using was neck and neck with the 6.5x284 when I was deciding.
Pretty sure I fell victom to the "wow factor" seeing some ballistics on some shot out west......(at distances I do NOT need lol).
The 7mm-08 is much easier to get rounds and brass for but something about "shooting something no one else uses" at least locally, has always held my interest.......so, that's where I went.
SORRY to get a bit OT. Back on now
Your 7mm08 will be a winner out there. Keep us informed! Thanks though God Bless Steve

Hopefully yours comes in soon so you have time to work some loads up for it and get it dialed in!

I love that caliber Jajwrigh. I would like to put together one eventually as well... save your notes!

6.5x284 would be a fun one to play with - can't fault you for pulling the trigger on it.

Any of the .308 caliber cased cartridges are very accurate. While I like Varget powder I found H4350 to be more accurate and faster in my .260 Rem which is 6.5-08. h.h.

I really struggled to find a combo my 260 liked. I was getting close to giving up on it and moving it down the road. A friend of mine had good success with Varget & 140 GameKings in his 6.5x55 and suggested I give that a shot. They grouped up very well & I quickly settled on a load in that combination. Don't think I ever tried H4350 in it - may have to try it sometime just for kicks.

Dave, Try 44.0 grains of H4350 and a Nos 120 BT. My Savage Striker 260 Rem shot this load .5 @200 yards. h.h.

I had a 7mm/08 Encore that shot the 140 BTs into 1 inch at 100 yards using IMR-4350. Took three deer with it the farthest at 175 yards. All did the same 20 yard death run and flopped over. All were pass throughs even when a piece of the shoulder was hit. The 120 grain BTs liked Varget and went just under and inch at 100 yards. Never shot anything but paper with them but I am sure they would work.
