Got back last night. Tough hunting up there this season. Saw lots of roaming hens and not many longbeards. Did manage to find a small group of birds with a longbeard in it. They were roosting somewhere near a ridge that we had permission to hunt. Got set up the next morning as close to the property they were on as I could get and still be on the land we had permission on. It was very foggy that morning as the fog was rolling in from lake Michigan. Noting happened off the roost, not a sound. I waited till the fog lifted a little and did a series of yelps. Nothing. Waited another half hour and did another series. I heard a gobble that sounded like it was a mile away. I waited a little bit and yelped again. He gobbeled again and sounded like maybe he was getting a little closer. I waited another 10 minutes or so and called again. He gobbled and was a whole lot closer. I was set up on an old logging road that went down to the bottom of the ridge. I figured if he came up the ridge that would be the way he would come. I did a few soft clucks and he gobbled and he was about half way up the ridge. I got ready and waited. Nothing happened for what seemed like forever but was probably only about 10 minutes. I did a couple more real soft clucks and he gobbled agin not more than 30 yards behind me. I thought crap, I figured wrong. He decided to come up through the thick stuff. I slid around the tree and had my back covered. I waited and waited and nothing. I couldn't see him. It was cover was thick and the fog didn't help. I decide to cluck one more time and when I did he gobbled and had turned back toward the logging road. I eased my gun up and out he stepped. When he hit the road he began running right at me. I let him get to 15 yards then dropped him. 2 year old bird. 9" beard, 3/4" spurs and around 20 lbs. It was fun! hw
