Anyone else getting reports of the harvest being up from last year?
I know we've got less than a week behind us, but the first weekend, one check station in Montgomery County had already checked 25 or 26 birds (on Saturday). They had checked 27 all of last year.
When we checked my tom on Sunday, it was the 14th bird checked at that station in Montgomery County. No idea how many they checked last year...
Assuming all of the birds checked were killed in Montgomery County (which might be a big assumption...) that puts the harvest in that county at the number from last year (40).
The check station in Morton (Putnam County) said they'd checked in around 80 birds on Saturday, last year they checked in around 90-95....
I'm thinking the harvest may be up a little this year.

Well, like I saids in a previous post, at Big Oaks, they killed 1 bird in the youth hunt last year, and 12 this year. They had 21 birds checked in the first day, and a gun shop in Madison had 30 the first day. The director at Big Oaks said they expected a lot of birds because of a bumper crop of poults a few years ago. I guess he was right. Now we just need more blind and deaf ones for me to hunt! :-)

I have heard a lot less shots. In the past on a normal weekend 20-30 This past weekend 10-15. Not that, that means anything because during the week it could be up and I am not there.

I don't know the statement for sure but one of my hunting buddies was checked by our moderator ICOWinchell early opening morning in Vigo county and he said that ICOWinchell told him that he had already seen over 30 turkeys, I assume he meant dead.

Turkey biologist says we had a good hatch two years ago which means lots of two year old vocal birds around.
Unfortunately hatch was bad last year.

I saw one jake and about fifteen or so 2+ year olds during the first couple days of the season. I still think next year will be good, bunches of 3 year olds.

BTW, one of the turkeys harvested at Big Oaks during the youth hunt was a 26# monster with a 11.75" beard. Talk about being spoiled for life!

I know that my friend's son got one, but I am not 100% sure how big it was. He has had a great year though, 2 in KY 1 in Ind and his son got the one at BO.... Any idea where more of the blind and deaf ones are? I still need a bird, I am about 1/2 tempted to head by Kroger's, get a butter ball and blast it....You think I am kidding? I must say my odds are getting better, I now have some private land in BC to hunt, maybe I can spook them all there LOL!!!

With the plethora of 2 yr. old birds everyone is reporting seeing & harvesting this season, a lot of these birds will survive to next season. While we may not have as many turkeys overall next year, I believe we'll see many more 3 year old birds than we have ever seen before in this state. IMO, this translates to mean that the turkey population in Indiana is now reaching maturity. Thanks to the IDNR for what I think is a fantastic job of wildlife management! BTW rhinodogg, happy birthday!

I hunt the Clay / Owen County border and the bird numbers are way up in this area. Seven of us hunted opening day and six of us got birds. They ranged in size from 24.5 to 19 lbs. Two had 25 mm spurs. I would say 1 four year old, 3 three year olds, and 2 two year olds. No jakes taken but we saw a couple. My group all said they saw other Toms besides the ones they shot ,so plenty are left.
