I am pretty new to turkey hunting. There aren't a lot of them around my hunting ground, but I'm starting to see them more often.
My hunting partner had never been turkey hunting, but wanted to give it a try this year. He deer hunts with me and hasn't seen any sign of them, let alone an actual turkey. So I am sure he had some doubts about how much luck we would have.
Thursday was my first day to hunt. He had to work, so I went by myself. I had one gobbling at daylight about 75 yards away, but then he just shut up. I waited, what seemed like forever, hoping he would come back. I finally decided to switch locations, that was a mistake as I spotted him about sixty yards away.
I wasn't sure if he spotted me or not, so I went back and waited another hour and a half. I was ready to leave, but I wanted to go to the area where I last seen the bird. (My partner was going to be back with me in the morning and I wanted to see if I could find some tracks to show him they really were out there.)
All of the sudden, he took off about ten yards in front of me. My gun came up instinctively, but I didn't shoot. I had just blown it again. (Of course I never found any tracks either.)
My partner had said he would be happy if he just heard one gobbling. We get there in the morning and I am really hoping he gets to hear this bird. We step out of the truck and I thought I heard the bird gobbling already. Of course he didn't hear it. We get closer and I know he's gobbling, but still my partner can't hear him. Finally, we are getting real close and the bird lets out a gobble. I turn around to ask if he heard it that time and all I see is a big smile across his face.
We get set up, but the bird gets quiet and we don't see anything. We finally decide to leave and come back for an afternoon hunt.
When we come back, we take a drive around the block to see if we can spot anything. I know it's going to be a long evening and I wasn't in a rush to get back out there. I asked him if he wanted to switch locations with me, but he was happy where he was at. So I head on to my site. About half an hour later I hear his gun go off. Turkey Down!
He's pretty happy about it and so am I. Hopefully, I'll get some of that luck!
