COBDEN, ILL.
An Illinois State Police captain accidentally shot two men while turkey hunting last week, authorities said Monday.
The shooting is under investigation by the Department of Natural Resources, said spokesman Chris McCloud.
No charges have been filed, he said.
Capt. Scott Rice, who heads the investigations division covering a part of Southern Illinois near Du Quoin, shot two men in a field at 6:45 a.m. April 24, authorities said.
The shooting occurred near Cobden, which is in Union County, about 120 miles southeast of St. Louis, McCloud said.
The men who were shot, ages 65 and 50, were treated and released from a hospital in Cape Girardeau, Mo.
Rice did not know that the other men were nearby, and the men did not know Rice was there when the shooting took place, McCloud said.
He was off-duty at the time of the shooting.
Rice did not return a phone message left at his office Monday.
