I hunted there on Saturday. I hunted in area 7. I got into the woods a little before 5. Got set up and no more than 15 minutes heard a gobble to the east. Not really knowing what I am doing turkey hunting I hit the slate call a couple of times and he gobbled again. This went on for about 20 to 25 mintues.
Then it just went dead. I mean there was no shooting except at the range. I only heard 2 single shots the whole time out. Did see 2 nice sized does though.
This being my first time I have ever heard a turkey gobble in the woods was gratifying for me. Now I want to do more turkey hunting but don't know where to go. Anybody willing to take a beginner up in the NW I would appreciate it.

Thanks for the report. I got picked for this coming Sun/Mon/Tues. Last time I turkey hunted JP was about 5 or so years ago and heard one gobbler and we spooked it off the roost. I know area 7 well and was thinking it would be a good spot. Do they let people in the waterfowl area? If not I bet thats where they all are. I got a buddy taking me Saturday in Laporte and if I get one I won't do the JP thing. I got to call down there to get the scoop on the birds if its even worth trying.

As far as I know you can't hunt the Marsh. I did see a Jake up in between area 4 and 5 on private property. It was walking along side the road. I was talking with a buddy here at work and he said the same thing you did about all the birds being in the Marsh.
Good luck to you if you do go.
