Guys, I am searching for a decent 2-way radio to use in the field. Here is my modest list of "must have's".
Vibrate ringer Adjustable volume Simple to operate
A couple years back my son bought a cheap pair of Midlands and gave one to me. They are a great idea but these things suck! They require the operator to take a users manual into the field just to use the damn things. The symbols are so confusing that I am guessing this is the spanish version. They have an extremely loud ringer, and no volume control. There has to be something better on the market and if you know of one I'd appreciate hearing about it. Thanks in advance. BOBinIN

I have a pair of Midlands and they work just fine for me. These are (at the time) one of their better sets with many options. I would suggest whatever brand you go with get the longest range capability you can cause they never reach as far as they claim in my experiences using them.

I've had really good luck with the Cobra micro talks. I've owned midlands and motorolas and had problems with both of those brands. The fine folks at Cabelas allowed me do "downgrade" to the Cobras and sent me a check back for the difference after trying several of each of the above brands. With the Motorolas I had issues with the batteries while under warranty on two seperate sets. After the second set Cabelas let me upgrade and pay the difference on a nice set of Midlands. Of the two sets of Midlands I had one radio in each set would just quit working. Finally I said let me try some of the Cobras and I haven't had any issues with them in over 3 years.

I've been doing some research and am wondering if anyone has the "Motorola MR-350R" radios? It seems to have all the things I am looking for...vibrate ringer, adjustable volume and looks easy to use. In addition it has a flashlight built into it. A pair is listed for $54.25 at Walmart. So...unless you can talk me out of it, I think that's the direction I'm going. If you've tried them, let me know what you thought. BOB

BOBinIN, ONLY MHO, but I would suggest Motorola - then Motorola, & finally Motorola!! I have had other brands over the years (still do!), & while they worked fine - I have found that Motorola has by far had (and MAINTAINED!) the best reception. I now usually use the others as backups when I forget to turn the Motorola's off & leave them in my parka all night!! ;D I do not have that exact model (I think mine is a predecessor!) and it has been a GREAT set!
