I PRACTICE regularly at 45 yards (the furthest I can without a lot of effort!) so probably the longest shot i would take at a live animal would probably be 40-45...IF conditions were perfect!!
That being said - the furthest shot I HAVE ever taken on a live animal was 27 yards.

My absolute personal limit is 30 yds due to my failing eyesight. I just bumped it up to 30 last year after having a couple of nice deer at that distance from me the year before when my limit was 25 yds, but I practiced at 30 quite a bit last year, and now feel confident at that distance.

Haven't bow hunted much in several years, but when I hunted regularly my self imposed limit was 30 yards. Although I practiced out to 50 yards.

furtherest Ive ever killed a deer is 25 yards, Elk at 40. The way I bow hunt throwing one out there 40 or 50 yards isnt possible. and thats the way I like it.

I dont think a shoulder shot is lethel at 35 yards, you start throwing them out that far and have alittle slip you didnt kill that animal. Thats not for me! Thats just my 2cents.

Maximum shot distance is as unique to each hunter as their fingerprints. I personally work to keep shots as short as possible; however, I would take a forty yard poke at a calm, stationary deer in a heartbeat. I usually don't get clear shots at that distance, but I would take it if it was presented. I personally don't practice enough to take fifty plus shots most years.
I know a lot of people hate Chuck Adams, but what he said about shot distance made sense. If you can put it in the kill zone consistently and conditions are right, go for it, even at fifty yards. If you feel uncomfortable or unprepared for longer shots, don't take em. And to the ones who fanatically insist on 30 yards and under as some sort of religious requirement...he said don't hold others to your own sloppy standards.
I think their is honor to be found in knowing your limitations and sticking to them. If you know that a certain yardage is your max and you don't let pride force you into trying longer shots, that is excellent. If you can drop a deer at fifty yards, then that is also excellent.

I try to get as close as possible....to me bowhunting is about how close, not how far you can shhot from...BUT, I practice at 60 and 70 yards just in case, and both of my biggest bucks I've taken at 45 and 47 yards...go figure....but if I had my choice I'd rather shoot em at 5 yards!
