enough is enough, Im throwin down the guantlet. i and others are in the process of forming a NEW sportsmen/women alliance. Rules will be simple enough, we stand in support of ALL hoosier sportsmen and women, whether they bowhunt, trap, fish, run hounds or just like to pick flowers. We WILL NOT stand opposed to ANY lawful group of sportsmen and women. We will strive to SAVE our hunting heritage...and the heritages of others! Wanna be a part of something good? from the get go? Join me and other like minded individuals. this is in the startup phase, but is long over due IMHO. If you want in, contact the email below. If you have any experiance that may be useful (accounting, non profit start up, advertising etc, let us know) also add any thoughts and opinions you wish. step one... hoosiercoalition@aol.comwe'll need membership in the thousands...not a hundred or two like some indiana groups

Well I think it would be a good thing but I would like to know... Is this the official mission statement or just a rough draft? we stand in support of ALL hoosier sportsmen and women, whether they bowhunt, trap, fish, run hounds or just like to pick flowers. We WILL NOT stand opposed to ANY lawful group of sportsmen and women. We will strive to SAVE our hunting heritage...and the heritages of others! Please expand on what you mean here... We WILL NOT stand opposed to ANY lawful group of sportsmen and women. Don't get me wrong with my questions trapperdave, I think it a good thing to get more participation at the "stakeholder" level (assuming this is where you are going with this) I know very little to nothing about accounting, non-profits, ect but if this goes where I hope a new org would go you can count me in for participation where I can...looking forward to more details.

Does anyone know a lawyer that might be sympathetic and work at a discounted rate to set up the not for profit?

Establishing a not-for profit is pretty much a fill in the blank process. All instructions that I have seen have been pretty user friendly.

I'm pretty sure the majority of all types of clubs, organizations are non-for-profit whether 10 or 200 members strong. When my father help establish an archery club that held public shoots they had to go through this process. As I recall it was rather painless. This club survived for years until the club lost the property the range was located on when the coal mine that this club was leasing the ground from for 1 dollar a year decided to mine the ground.

step one is organizing and recruiting. get all you know to join the cause. After we get a sizable membership, we'll sit down and hash out the particulars....and decide if NFP is the way to go. Im not so sure its neccesary, and might even hinder the objective.
what I do know, is Im tired of the special interest groups tossing all others under the bus to further their own agendas. I want my children (and their children.....) to grow up with the same outdoor opportunities I had as a child.

NOT a narrow minded "my way or the highway" organization....got too many of those now.

You for sure want to be incorporated. Costs about $1500-$2000 for a lawyer to do it, but you can get the forms off of the Sec. of States web site and do it your self. You don't need to be a lawyer, but someone with experience in filing legal papers might be an assest. You'll have to file some forms each year with the SOS to stay active.
Also, you'll want to ask soon if your group will bve considered in the stakeholders meetings, albeit too late for this process?
You'll need officers to list on the papers, and you'll need board members. Plus, you'll need by-laws and goals prestated so that the officers can keep the thing on the right tract. You will find that your group will be infiltrated by the other stakeholders so that they can derail it to support their adgendas. It's a dog eat dog world, and formng a club will highlight that pretty damn quick.
Good luck, it'll end up being a lot of work for a few guys. Most will not get involved, so you have to be aware of that going in.

Oh yes.. if they join with enough of their supporters they can get themselves elected and their goes the " we stand in support of ALL hoosier sportsmen and women, whether they bowhunt, trap, fish, run hounds or just like to pick flowers. We WILL NOT stand opposed to ANY lawful group of sportsmen and women. We will strive to SAVE our hunting heritage...and the heritages of others!" .
