Been reading every one's views on all the rule changes. This is my 1st post on any of it. I've been deer hunting, here in Indiana since the mid 70's. Started when you were allowed 1 with a gun and 1 with a bow. I've seen all the changes in the last 30+ years. For the most part, I don't have a problem with a majority of the rule changes, except the following:
No way they should shorten/change the general firearms/ML seasons. It's kinda like cutting off your nose, to spite your face.
Legalize crossbows for everything. I used to bow hunt with a compound, and hunted for over a decade with traditional archery equipment. Even owned a trad. archery shop/mail order business. Didn't have a problem with crossbows then, and don't have one now. You guys are right, it will help take additional antlerless deer.
Not sure about a 7 day antlerless season in Oct. Temps are generally warm, and crops still in the field, not sure it will have a big impact. The late Dec. antlerless season is ok by me.
Cartridge case length. This is the only personal one for me. I have a .45-70, I love my .45-70, and would love to hunt with my .45-70 for deer. DNR allow it, and I might kill a couple extra deer next yr, because I could use it. Hint, hint ;D
Now I'm going to get to my personal crux of the matter. For me, I like to take 3 deer a yr. for the freezer/jerky making. That can be a buck and 2 does, or, like last year, 3 does[turned down 7 bucks, not big enough]. By the time I buy a firearms tag, and , like last yr. a ML tag, plus a couple of bonus tags, I'm pretty much tapped out on paying for paper. Couple that with an avg. cost of $80 or so for processing each deer, and I'm up in the $325/$350 range for hunting.
To take more deer, we have to attract more hunters. Also, in this general state of economic woes, we need to get the tag prices down, or offer incentives to take additional antlerless deer, period.
I'll be 60, next yr., I don't know how many more yrs. I'll be hunting yet, or how many I'll continue to try to take each yr. Most of the guys around home, are like me, getting older. Not as much fire in the belly to "fill all the tags", like we all used to have. Fewer young guys seem to be coming into the fold, at least around here.
My only "rant" in this diatribe is buck licenses. You shouldn't have to buy 3 danged licenses to hunt 1 buck!
Sell 1 buck tag, and attach at least 1 doe tag to it, good for all appropriate seasons! Antlerless tags should be good anytime, with any legal weapon! And again, don't forget me and my .45-70....I MIGHT take a couple extra deer, for the state to give to folks "older than me", just for the privilage of taking my baby hunting! ;D
Ok, enough from this ole codger, carry on.
