Anyone smart enough to find the data on WHAT the economic impact will be on the shorter seasons to local businesses........I'm sure it will be a substantial hit for a lot of folks.......might be of help with the legislature if anyone plans to go in that direction?

I had a friend write an article in the paper and said the very same thing. Two weeks less of gun hunters purchasing things like gas, food and a place to stay will really hurt some of the cabin renters and hotels around my area and that's a fact....

Maybe some local mechants should have been picked as "Stakeholders" in this thing?

If one of you guys knows of a business owner that this will impact negatively, maybe you could get him to do some contacting of those in charge?

Kind of negates the argument about how adopting telecheck will hurt the check station business now don't it?

I know it will hit our local business hard since we are located between St. Rd. 37 & St. Rd. 67 which are the main arteries from the North to all of the state & federal ground at the south end of our county line. You would not believe all of the deer hunter customers & traffic Friday, Saturday, & Sunday of the opening weekend of firearms season!

I'm going to stop at small businesses in deer hunting country every chance I get and inform them of these proposals and hand them a list of contacts. I suggest everyone do the same. There's a lot of work to do.

Especially when you factor in the fact that gun season is now the week of Thanksgiving.

I talked to a couple gunshop owners when I was starting to get the word out.
Both said that the thought this would result in less guns and ammo beng sold.

From the chart on page 30 of the document in Woody's link:
$223,023 Total of all hunting expenditures in 2006 for Indiana (Resident and Non-Resident)
$44,604.60 Per month spent (Divided by 5 for Aug.-Jan.)
$22,302.30 Potential loss of 14 days of deer season.
I'm sure this number is actually higher, because I'd wager 80% of the total money spent revolves around deer season, and therefore it could be divided by the actual number of deer hunting days.

Thanks for looking that up. I hate to keep harping on this but with a 9 day season that falls during Thanksgiving week the impact will probably be even greater. We normally have 3 weekends of gun hunting which now will be basically cut to one (or perhaps a bit more than one). The second weekend many folks will be on the road because of the holiday.

You missed the multiplier. That 223,023 is times 1,000. TotaL Indiana hunter expenditures are $223 MILLION.

According to the 2006 National Survey of Fishing, Hunting, and Other Wildlife-Associated Recreation for Indiana - There are 237,000 Indiana hunters, of which 85% hunted “big game” (white tailed deer) in Indiana yearly. Their days of hunting total 4,184,000 That gives an average days per hunter of 18. Now the IDNR is wanting to cut those days down, when we should be actively trying to extend the days for more hunter opportunity. Taking away 14 days of either sex deer hunting and replacing it with 9 days of antlerless only will see a huge impact on the number of hunters hunting and will undoubtedly negatively impact the economy. Hunters total expenditures was $223 million. A large portion of that is by deer hunters. That is a lot of money. Reducing the number of days of the regular firearm and muzzleloader season will negatively impact a lot of people. Everyone from retailers, gun shops, gas stations, grocery stores, motels, outdoor stores, campgrounds (state and private) will be effected. Source: www.census.gov/prod/2008pubs/fhw06-in.pdf

***REVISED***
From the chart on page 30 of the document in Woody's link:
$223M Total of all hunting expenditures in 2006 for Indiana (Resident and Non-Resident)
Divide that $223 milion by 12 and then multply by 5 Aug.-Jan
That would be $92,916,000 for those months.
Divide that by the total number of days in Aug- to January 1 (153)and you get $607,294 per day. Then reducing the days of hunting by 14 will result in a net loss of of $8,502,116.
I'm sure this number is actually higher, because I'd wager 80% of the total money spent revolves around deer season, and therefore it could be divided by the actual number of deer hunting days.
Now a very small amount of that will be made up by the 9 antlerless days, but not much.
At least that is the way Woody figured it.. ;D Thanks Woody!
