I'll give you my first hand impression of the "deer meeting."
Huntmeister *The Note Taker Extraordinary) could not get off work..so I scribbled a few notes while trying to listen at the same time .. Not too good at multi-tasking.
I met js2397. Said Howdy to Gundude (ate some of his popcorn), John, Joe Bacon, Doug Alman, Gene Hoppkins ( although he looked at me like "who are you"
), Turkey Scout (pleasure to buy his lunch), highcottenguide and JackC.
Comedy relief was provided by some lady wildlife rehabiltators on a coyote proposal. The only part of their spiel that made sense was that captured coyotes held for urine scent should be treated humanely. Other than that they were pretty shrill... all repeating the company line.
When we got to the deer proposal Mark Reiter (Director of F & W)got up and introduced it. He changed nothing. He did say that this is a "5 year trial" even though there was nothing in the proposal that said that. Personally I don't like to see us locked into a 5 year trial when the you know what could hit the fan at anytime..
He said that it is the DNR's goal to have a harvest of 60% females and 40% males (includes button bucks). I am not aware of any state that has that percentage or even close to it...Anyone?
He said that the October antlerless weekend was scheduled for the second weekend.
It was heartening to hear that the NRC (mainly Pat Early NRCAC chairperson) quizzed him on it a lot, oft repeating that even though this was DNR and "stakeholders" generated that there a lot of Indiana deer hunter to be heard from in the coming months..
Bryan Poynter basically followed up with the same thing.
They know how big this is and are getting the inclination that there is a multitude of hunters out there that need to be brought into the process. No doubt the emails, cards and letters are getting through.
They will hold TWO (law only requires one)NRC input meetings - one North and one South AND will hold them at a time condusive to the working man's hours..
Hopefully they will be on Saturdays like the NRC AC meeting was held.
Chairman Poynter called those stakeholder groups representatives that were for the proposal to speak first. They all did and spoke positively about the proposals. No surprise there. A couple commented that they approve the proposal as it stands and any changes could change that approval.
After that he asked if there were any hunting groups that opposed it. Two hunting groups (I did not catch their names) gave input. Both said that they agreed with everything except the moving and shortening of the gun and muzzleloader season.
Brayan then said that he was going to cut off input. Whoa! I and Gundude might have made just a little bit of an azzes out of ourselves as we both said "WHOA!" I raised my hand and said," Mr. Poynter. I got up at 4:30 (eastern) this morning and drove 3 1/2 hours from Newburgh to speak." He was kind enough to allow me to speak and then he cut it off.
There was some disgruntled people in the audience after that. A coupel made comments about it.
Mr. Poynter assured everyone that they would have plenty of time and "open mikes" at the two scheduled meetings and could give input via email letters and phone calls.
Today's meeting was basically a formality of "prelimarily" adopting the proposal which they did.
A couple guys were hot after the meeting. I talked to them in the hallway outside. One had taken off work to speak..
Keep those cards and letters coming folks..![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png)
