In order to help control the herd of marauding deer, I'm gonna try to work in some range time soon. I reamed my Handi 357 to max sometime back and haven't had opportunity to give it a good workout yet.
Has anyone been to Atterbury since the new management took over? If so, what do you think?

I was talking to a gun shop owner about the new proposals and we got to the 1.8" in length cartridge proposal. He got out a .460 S& W and it is a whopper shell.
What will that bad boy do?

Woody, if 1.8 becomes the new max length, that will open the door to a lot of new possibilities. It wouldn't be difficult to trim .35 Rem cases to meet this criteria. They could still be loaded out to pretty much the same oal.
That .460 would sho' nuff put the smack down on Bambi!

Those .460 shells are pricey too, unless you reload of course.

Those .460 shells are pricey too, unless you reload of course. VERY PRICEY! A .44 Magnum will do just as good of job in harvesting a Deer, only a bit less pricey. Consider also that all places won't carry .460 S&W ammo or guns.

But we just gotta have bigger guns and faster cars!! Tim Taylor syndrome. All males have it, although it remain dormant until visiting gun shop or car lot. Resistance is futile!! (That's for the treckers here)

The 460 is quite a high pressure round. No it won't kill deer any deader than other guns, but it'll get the bullet there faster, which means a flatter trajectory, which means a slightly longer effective range.

the 460 is supposed to be quite loud also. I wonder how the recoil and noise in a 460 rifle compare to a 12 ga slug?

I doubt you'll see it chambered in any lever guns; it's simply too high pressured. Bolt guns are a possibility, but how many bolt guns in current regular production are chambered for a rimmed case... That pretty much leaves single shots.
Based on the few reports I've seen of Encore handguns chambered in 460, recoil isn't for the faint of heart without a muzzle brake. I'm sure with a lighter action in a single shot recoil won't be much better unless weight is added to the gun or a muzzle brake is installed. I don't know if NEF chambers it, and I would almost bet they either don't or won't for a while. A custom rifle-length barrel is do-able for an Encore, I don't think there's many (if any) T/C factory rifle barrels.

I ran a comparison of the 460 vs the 500. I don't have a 460 but I do have a 500 in Encores; handgun & carbine. (325gr bullet for the 460, 400gr for the 500)
Recoil Impulse: 500 - 3.72, 460 - 3.55 (lb-secs) Recoil Velocity: 500 - 19.95, 460 - 19.03 (of firearm in fps) Recoil Energy: 500- 37.09, 460 - 33.75 (ft-lbs)
So the 500 edges out the 460, but not drastically. The 500 in the carbine is no big deal; the handgun is a 15" barrel with a brake and while it is certainly shootable I can tell you you do know you touched it off and there is some muzzle rise even with a brake.
PS. those numbers assume a 6# handgun - which is about where my 15" scoped Encores run.
