Maybe not "deer Hunting" in you typical sense, but since elk are in the deer family... I took the family Cataloochee Valley to the GSMNP at the end of May, and the elk volunteers down there told us that an elk had been poached in the park the previous fall (they had the antlers with them). According to the volunteers, the guy insisted he didn't know he was inside a national park (I say BS - there are only two ways into Cataloochee and both have signs, and consists of 45 min to an hour drive down a windy 1.5 lane gravel/dirt road). Anyway, I've been trying to find out more info about the incident, and here was the verdict: www.nationalparkstraveler.com/2010/07/man-who-poached-elk-great-smoky-mountains-national-park-receives-jail-time-heavy-fine6246"U.S. Magistrate Judge Dennis L. Howell last Thursday sentenced Mr. Cromer to 150 days imprisonment. In addition, the man’s firearm, a Browning .270 caliber rifle autographed by Richard Petty, was ordered by the court to be forfeited to the government and he was ordered to pay $8,384 in restitution to the park. Furthermore, Mr. Cromer had to surrender his hunting license for two years, and he was banned from all national parks for two years." more info about the poaching incident: www.heraldsun.com/pages/full_story/push?article-Park+officials+track+suspected+elk+poacher+to+N-C-%20&id=4681127-Park+officials+track+suspected+elk+poacher+to+N-C-&instance=main_articleskinnymoose.com/moosedroppings/2009/11/17/bull-elk-21-poached-inside-great-smokey-mountain-national-park/

It's all about the antlers. Interestingly enough, he didn't cut off the antlers after he shot it. The tool shot it and left the entire animal lay there (in an area well known for bears to populate) and drove ~100-150 miles back home to get some of his Bubba buddies to help him load it. All of his buddies told him their was no way they would help him, and then Park Rangers came knocking on his door. To further show this guy isn't the brightest bulb on the Christmas Tree, he shot the elk in an area people flock to that time of year to watch elk!

I went there a few years back and saw the elk. Really neat. He should be hanged.

Obvioulsy an idiot.
Not that any poaching is accceptable, but this guy is not the poacher you need to be worried about. The ones that actually think ahead and don't get caught are the real problem. They are out there in higher numbers than guys like this idiot.
